The Face That Sold a Country

Park Joo-mi didn't need a movie script to make half of South Korea fall in love with her in 1993. She signed an advertising contract with Asiana Airlines that lasted seven years, and it worked as her real school of public exposure. People called the airline's offices asking whether the flight attendant in the posters was a real employee, because her image projected an almost unreal calm.

She was the face of a nation without saying a word.

She officially debuted on MBC in 1991 after passing talent auditions, but her early career was marked by that aura of unshakable elegance. In 1999, she took part in Hur Jun, a medical drama that reached historic ratings in Korean television. That project proved that behind a symmetrical face was an actress capable of keeping up with the grueling shooting schedules of the late century.

But Park Joo-mi knew that time was on her side and wasn't afraid of long silences.

The Voluntary Break and Return to the Set

In 2001, she abruptly put the brakes on her career. She married businessman Lee Jang-won and stepped away from the spotlight for almost a decade to focus on her family life. In an industry that chews through new names every week, disappearing for ten years is often career suicide. But she returned in 2011 with the series Believe in Love, proving that her magnetism was still intact for casting directors.

She suffered a serious car accident in 2012 while filming The King’s Dream, which forced her to leave the production with internal injuries. That incident could have ended her career for good. She spent months in rehabilitation, and the fear of lasting physical effects was real for a long time. Her recovery was slow but steady, and it helped her choose her projects with much more composure from that point on.

No one expected such an aggressive comeback.

In 2016, she took on the role of the villain Jung Nan-jung in The Flower in Prison. It was a risky move because it broke with the sweet, sophisticated image she had cultivated since the 1990s. Critics were divided, but audiences responded with interest to this new, darker and more manipulative side. The actress realized that maturity allowed her to explore psychological corners that her own looks had previously kept off limits.

The streaming boom and the phenomenon of 2021

The year 2021 was an absolute turning point in her international career thanks to Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce). In this drama on TV Chosun, she played Sa Pi-young, a radio producer who deals with betrayal in a world of luxury and appearances. The series became a ratings phenomenon and reached a 16.6 percent share, a massive figure for a pay channel in South Korea.

And the gamble paid off.

Park Joo-mi carried the weight of the plot for three consecutive seasons until 2022. Her ability to keep her composure while her fictional world fell apart earned her the respect of a new generation of viewers who didn't know her from her airplane ads. The actress handles melodrama's timing with a technical precision that only comes from decades of observing the industry from both inside and outside.

In 2023, she worked again with screenwriter Im Sung-han on Durian’s Affair, a story of time travel and fantasy that defied the usual narrative logic. Filming for this production stretched over several months in locations in Gyeonggi Province. The series wrapped its run with a total of 16 episodes produced under strict visual quality control.
