The Suitcase from Prostějov

Paulina Porizkova was born in Czechoslovakia in 1965, amid the noise of Soviet tanks. Her parents fled to Sweden, leaving her behind with her grandmother, and that forced separation, lasting seven years, shaped a character the fashion industry never fully managed to tame.

She arrived in Paris at fifteen after a friend sent her photos to a modeling agency. In 1984 she became the first Central European woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. But while the world saw a perfect face, she was looking for a way into acting to escape the emptiness of the runway.

She didn't want to be a clothes hanger.

Her real big-screen debut came in 1987 with Anna. In this independent film she played a young Czech immigrant seeking success in New York alongside a veteran actress played by Sally Kirkland. Critics praised her naturalness, because deep down Paulina was simply telling her own story of displacement.

The Six-Million-Dollar Contract

In 1988 Estée Lauder offered her the most lucrative advertising contract of the era. Six million dollars a year to be the brand's global face. This financial milestone made her an untouchable figure for magazines but hurt her credibility in Hollywood.

Casting directors saw her as a model trying to act. In 1989 she starred in Her Alibi alongside Tom Selleck, and the experience turned out to be a professional disaster. Critics tore the film apart, and she received a Razzie Award nomination for Worst Actress.

And the industry responded coldly.

But in 1993 came the chance to work with Emir Kusturica on Arizona Dream. On this shoot she shared scenes with Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway in a production now considered a cult classic. In this project she showed that, under the right direction, her screen presence had a depth that studio blockbusters didn't know how to use.

The Inheritance of Emptiness

Her personal life was tied to Ric Ocasek (frontman of the band The Cars) from the time they met on the set of the music video for Drive in 1984. They married in 1989 and formed one of the most stable couples in the artistic world until their separation in 2017. Ocasek's death in 2019 revealed a devastating financial and emotional reality.

Ocasek excluded her from his will, citing abandonment. Paulina found herself at fifty-four dealing with grief and a precarious financial situation, despite having earned millions in her youth. Because the legal protection systems for major stars are often an illusion when contracts aren't airtight.

She then decided to write.

In 2022 she published her essay collection No Filter: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful. In it she examines aging in a society obsessed with youth and recounts how the film industry dropped her as soon as the first wrinkles appeared. The book became an instant bestseller in the United States.

Penguin Books handled distribution of the first edition that reached the top spots on the The New York Times bestseller list for several consecutive weeks. In 2024, the author still lives in New York, where she takes part in documentaries about the history of fashion in Eastern Europe.
