She grew up among lighting cables and film set breaks before learning to dodge photographers. Her mother, Susana Dosamantes, worked on set in Durango under Howard Hawks while the little girl picked up camera tricks behind the scenes. That school of sets forged a relationship with the lens that would shape every step of her public life.
And the media industry absorbed her without hesitation.
In the late eighties she juggled youth tours with Timbiriche alongside Televisa melodramas. In 1988 she played a teen villain in Pasión y poder, a role designed to break her childlike image in front of millions of viewers. Four years later, the musical telenovela Baila conmigo served as the definitive springboard for her exit from the group.
In 1992 she signed her solo record deal and sold more than a million copies of her first album in the Spanish-speaking market. But television had already taught her that pop music is consumed above all with the eyes.
In 1995 she starred in her only narrative feature film, Bésame en la boca, produced by Televicine and directed by Abraham Cherem. The project also starred Fernando Colunga and Charlie Massó in a fantasy plot about body swapping, tailored to her music repertoire. Film critics mercilessly panned the movie for its flimsy script.
So she left dramatic acting behind to focus on building her own public persona.
Instead of memorizing other people's scripts, she learned to direct her own shots. She designed an aggressive staging built on the visual language of American music video directors of the late nineties. Close-ups and saturated color replaced traditional Mexican melodrama.
And the move paid off in the boardrooms.
She landed on Spanish television in the summer of 1999 as the host of the show Vive el verano on Antena 3. Her teleprompter reading was clumsy, but her on-camera magnetism fit the breezy summer mood on the Iberian Peninsula. That move paved the way for the commercial push her new record label was planning.
In 2000 she released the album Paulina, produced by Estéfano. The album surpassed four million copies sold worldwide and firmly established her on European radio playlists. The production design of her videos turned every single into a three-minute advertisement with constant rotation on MTV.
Her English-language attempt came in 2002 with Border Girl. The record label invested huge sums in top-tier producers, but the U.S. market's response was cold compared with the welcome from Latin American audiences. The English-language industry demanded a technical precision that clashed with her limitations as a live vocalist.
Because television once again became her refuge when physical record sales collapsed worldwide.
In 2013 Simon Cowell signed her as a judge for the third season of The X Factor on the American network FOX, reportedly earning two million dollars per season. Her role was to build live tension and clash with the Anglo judges on the panel. That format confirmed that her true value in her mature years lay in unscripted entertainment.
She pursued the same pattern on the Spanish editions of La Voz and La Voz Senior during 2019. In 2023 she took on the digital phase of The Comeback Stage for the same show on Atresplayer, a spin-off format with modest audiences that ended its run without renewal for later seasons.
