Peter Outerbridge was born in Toronto in 1966 and grew up in an environment where art was not an option but a way of life. He studied at the University of Victoria, where he co-founded the company Way Off Broadway to get stage experience before moving to screen.
In 1990 he began landing supporting roles in Canadian television productions that barely covered his rent. But his angular face and that gaze that seems to analyze everything started to fit the suspense and science fiction genres.
Canadian television got too small for him very soon.
In 2004 he accepted the role of David Sandström in the series ReGenesis, and his career changed scale. Over four seasons he played a brilliant, arrogant scientist dealing with bioterrorist crises in a Toronto laboratory. He earned several Gemini Award nominations (Canada's equivalent of the Emmys) for this work and showed he could carry a complex plotline without overacting.
Outerbridge doesn't chase easy applause or sole leading-man billing on the red carpet. He prefers characters with moral complexity or those who hide secrets behind an appearance of perfect order.
In 2009 he made the leap into mainstream horror with a lead role in Saw VI. He played William Easton, an insurance executive who must survive macabre tests. It was a physically demanding, exhausting performance that gave him international visibility beyond cable television.
And the gamble paid off.
That exposure led to bigger-budget projects in the United States. Between 2010 and 2013, he played Ari Tasarov in Nikita, and in 2014 he joined the cast of Orphan Black as Henrik Johanssen. In this last production, he played the leader of a religious cult with a coldness that made viewers uneasy in every frame.
Still, the actor has always kept one foot in his home country, alternating big franchises with intimate dramas. For Outerbridge, the script comes before the paycheck at the end of the month.
In 2019 he put on the hitman's suit in the first season of The Umbrella Academy to bring Cha-Cha to life. It was a different register, where violence mixed with very dry humor. That same year he joined V-Wars alongside Ian Somerhalder, playing the cunning Calix Niklos.
He is a pure working actor.
In 2023, he joined the cast of the drama series Sullivan’s Crossing as Walter. It's a far more measured and emotional register than his previous work in science fiction. Filming for the second season of this production took place on locations in Nova Scotia during 2024 with a strictly Canadian crew.
Outerbridge has more than 130 credits on his professional profile in the audiovisual industry. In 2024 he wrapped his contract for three episodes of a streaming series filmed entirely in Toronto.
