Phénix Brossard doesn't have the face of the typical square-jawed French leading man. His features are sharp, and his eyes always seem to be processing information the viewer doesn't have. In 2010, he debuted in La Lisière, and from that very first moment it was clear his place was on the fringes of mainstream cinema.
Before turning twenty, he was already working with Géraldine Bajard. But mass recognition didn't come from his native France. It was the United Kingdom that best understood his physical fragility and his ability to play characters who hide secrets behind a calm surface.
That shoot in Somerset changed everything.
In 2015, he starred in Departure alongside Alex Lawther. The film explored desire and frustration in a rural French setting, but under British direction. Brossard played Clément with a silence that said more than any dialogue on screen. Because his ability to communicate without saying a word is his most valuable working tool.
And his bet on the international market paid off. Three years later, he played a terrorist in the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl. He worked under Park Chan-wook on a BBC production that let him show a technical coolness that no one had asked of him in French art-house cinema until then.
In 2018, he also took part in Benjamin, a dramedy directed by Simon Amstell. There, he showed that he could handle the rhythm of bittersweet comedy without losing the intensity that defines him. The English-speaking market keeps asking for him thanks to his flawless bilingual skills and his lack of acting mannerisms.
But he prefers to keep returning to Paris. So he alternates big period productions with independent films that barely have a promotional budget. In 2022, he took on the role of Du Barry in the Canal+ series Marie Antoinette. It's a performance that avoids baroque excess in favor of something far rawer and more direct.
The European industry tends to label him a luxury supporting actor.
Because his presence elevates any scene, even when he has only three lines of dialogue. In 2023, he shot Goutte d’Or, a drama that delves into mysticism and crime in the northern neighborhoods of Paris. His performance as Nils was a masterclass in physical restraint in front of a camera that never left the back of his neck.
In 2024, he took part in the short film The Last Day under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Durand. His schedule for 2025 includes two European co-productions that are still in post-production after a complicated financing process. Filming his latest movie in Lyon took just twenty-two days due to a lack of budget for overtime.
