Phil Dunster (Reading, 1992) grew up convinced his life would be decided on a rugby field. He had the build and the aggression needed for contact, but a knee injury knocked him out of competition before he turned twenty. That sudden stop forced him to find an emergency exit at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
And Plan B became the only plan.
In 2015, he landed his first significant film role in The Rise of the Krays. It wasn't a big production, and the script leaned heavily on derivative material, but it taught him how a professional set works. Dunster quickly learned that in this industry, talent takes a back seat without the discipline of an athlete.
British television rarely forgives blunders.
Between 2017 and 2018, he moved from one series to another, including Humans and Save Me. In these projects, he began refining his ability to play characters who hide an obvious fragility behind a facade of arrogance. But his real breakthrough didn't come until a casting call for a soccer series permanently changed his career path.
When Apple TV+ premiered Ted Lasso in 2020, few expected an actor from southern England to nail the Manchester accent with such precision. Dunster played Jamie Tartt not as a simple comedic villain but as a young man broken by paternal pressure.
No one expected a fictional egomaniac to have so many layers.
The series was a massive, global hit. Tartt's character evolved from an obstacle for the team into the emotional heart of the story. For this role, Dunster received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2023 after three seasons of steady growth.
Because Dunster understands that silence communicates more than a shout on screen. So he used his media exposure to choose projects that would move him away from the stereotype of the arrogant athlete. In 2022, he took part in The Devil’s Hour, produced by Steven Moffat, where he explored much darker and more psychological material.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the second season of Surface. This move confirmed his interest in psychological thrillers and productions with carefully crafted visuals. He no longer needed to prove he could carry a comedic scene, because his name started appearing on the wish lists of directors looking for an imposing yet controlled physical presence.
But his work isn't limited to being in front of the camera. In recent years, he has shown interest in developing stories from the technical and creative foundations up.
In 2025, he shot the film The Gutter under the direction of Isaiah and Yassir Lester. The production had a tight budget and a shooting schedule of just six weeks on location in the United States.
