Pierre Niney joined the Comédie-Française at age twenty-one. He was the youngest member in the institution's history, and that dry fact set the pace for a career that has never sought the middle ground. Before stepping onto a film set, he had already mastered the classic texts on the stages of France's national theater.
And the gamble paid off.
By 2010, he was combining prestigious theater work with supporting roles in light comedies. But the real change of scale came when he decided to leave the security of the public company and take a risk on the big screen full time. He did not want to be just an academic promise.
Because film demanded a physicality that the stage denied him.
To play the designer in Yves Saint Laurent (2014), he spent months learning to draw and studying the fashion designer's mannerisms. He won the César Award for Best Actor at age twenty-five. In the voting, he beat Gaspard Ulliel, who that same year starred in the other biographical version of the fashion creator.
That victory was more than a trophy for the display case. A nine-million-euro budget allowed the film to travel around the world and move beyond the purely European circuit. So he began choosing projects where technical control of the body was the absolute priority.
In 2016, he starred in Frantz under the direction of François Ozon. For this film, he learned German and how to play the violin to bring to life a tormented soldier after World War I. Much of the shoot was done in black and white to preserve the look of the era.
But Niney also knows how to work with silence.
In the thriller Black Box (2021), he played an acoustic analyst who examines airplane black boxes. The production grossed more than twelve million dollars in the French market and proved that his name could carry genre films without large ensemble casts. Nearly two million moviegoers went to theaters in his home country.
In 2024, he took on the role of Edmond Dantès in the version of The Count of Monte Cristo. It is one of the most ambitious productions in European cinema, with a cost of 43 million euros. Filming stretched over seventy-eight days on locations in France, Belgium and Malta.
Off camera, he founded his own production company, Ninety-Eight Films. Through this structure, he manages his personal projects and looks for scripts that step away from the industry's traditional formulas. In 2024, he signed a collaboration deal with Prime Video to develop exclusive content.
The film Mascarade (2022) marked his professional meeting with director Nicolas Bedos. Filming took place on the French Riviera, and the final budget exceeded €14 million. The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival outside the official competition.
The international distribution deal for his latest major production was closed in more than twenty territories before its release.
