The Finnish film industry rarely produces stars with massive international appeal. Pihla Viitala broke that mold in 2010 when the Berlin International Film Festival named her one of Europe's most promising actresses. Before that, she was just a student at the Helsinki Theatre Academy trying to find her place in low-budget local productions.
Her real debut came in 2007 with the film Ganes. But it was April's Daughters that got casting directors to put her name on their international radar. She won the Shooting Star award, and suddenly the phone started ringing with foreign area codes she barely recognized.
And the breakthrough really happened.
In 2013, she played Mina in the blockbuster Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Sharing the screen with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton seemed like the start of a permanent life in Los Angeles. But Viitala never quite fit into the American studio system. She preferred to return to the cold of the north in search of more complex characters and less digital makeup.
Her true international breakout came in 2018 with the premiere of Karppi. In Spain, it was known as Deadwind, thanks to its global distribution on streaming platforms. Playing detective Sofia Karppi demanded absolute physical restraint. The series aired for three seasons until 2021 and set her face as the standard for Scandinavian suspense.
Her career didn't have immediate commercial success. Between 2014 and 2016, she took part in minor projects that barely crossed the borders of Finland. That creative slump ended when she decided that acting was no longer enough to satisfy her curiosity about technical storytelling.
Pihla decided to step behind the camera.
In 2023, she premiered The Worst Idea Ever. She not only starred in it but also served as the series' creator and director. It's a dramatic comedy that moves away from snowbound crime to explore midlife crisis and toxic friendships. Finnish critics praised her ability to shoot fast-paced dialogue without losing the naturalism of the scene.
Her style has always steered clear of overacting. That's why her work in Latin Lover in 2015 and on the series Arctic Circle in 2018 keeps the same line of restrained performance. She has more than forty credits across film and television since she began working professionally in the European audiovisual industry.
The production of The Worst Idea Ever cost about 2.5 million euros.
