Rachel Hunter landed in New York at seventeen with a Ford agency contract in hand. She arrived from New Zealand with an athletic look that fit perfectly with what the American market was looking for in the late eighties. Her athletic build set her apart from the extremely thin models who would soon dominate the runways.
In 1989, she starred in a Pantene shampoo ad that became famous for a line about hair care. That ad campaign gave her massive visibility before she turned twenty.
That ad changed everything.
Soon, specialty magazine covers followed. In 1994, she appeared in the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated, and the press began following her every move in Manhattan. But her life changed scale when she met Rod Stewart at a Los Angeles nightclub.
They married in 1990, when she was twenty-one and he was forty-five. The age gap fueled British tabloids for years. And although the marriage lasted until their separation in 1999, Hunter had to fight to keep her identity from being swallowed up by the singer's shadow.
Her film career was a conscious decision to step away from the fashion world. In 2001, she appeared in the movie Rock Star alongside Mark Wahlberg, playing a guitarist's wife. It wasn't a role with much dramatic weight, but it gave her a foothold in the major Hollywood studio circuit.
But the film industry is tough on women who come from the runway. Hunter appeared in mid-budget productions such as The Benchwarmers in 2006 and took on roles in TV movies that didn't always get good reviews. She never landed that breakout role that would take her beyond the image of a model who had become an actress.
And then she decided she didn't need the approval of casting directors.
In 2015, she premiered her own TV show, Rachel Hunter’s Tour of Beauty. In the series, she traveled the world examining beauty and health standards across different cultures. The format did well in international markets, and a full second season was filmed in 2016.
During filming in India, she realized her interest in wellness was not just a camera facade. She began studying yoga professionally and stepped away from Los Angeles social events to spend more time at meditation retreats.
But the business kept running despite her spiritual retreat.
Hunter managed her image of maturity without relying on the usual nostalgia circuit. In 2024, she organized a series of yoga retreats in Bali and New Zealand, priced at more than eighteen hundred dollars per spot. Her name still sells products tied to conscious living and natural health.
Her work as a host stayed active through occasional appearances on talent competitions. In 2025, her main focus shifted to her digital wellness platform, where she sells meditation courses and training programs for yoga instructors.
The parent company that manages her image rights reported gross revenue of two million dollars at the close of its 2023 fiscal year.
