Remo Girone was born in 1948 in Asmara. He spent his childhood in Eritrea, which was still an Italian colony, before moving to Rome to study law. That geographic distance shaped a emotional coldness he would later bring to his most reserved characters.
But law could not compete with the stage, and he ended up enrolled at the Silvio d'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1974, he made his film debut in Roma rivuole Cesare. It was a modest start that did not foreshadow his future prominence in European fiction.
But his classical training allowed him to move easily between theater and television cameras for more than a decade. As a result, his name started to turn heads among the most important casting directors in Italy.
In 1987, he first appeared in the series La piovra. His portrayal of Tano Cariddi made him the face of villainy for 70 million viewers around the world. That unscrupulous banker was his shadow for seven seasons and defined his career in Italian television.
His icy gaze defined everything.
But massive success didn't stop him. The actor always tried to escape typecasting through theater. On stage, he performed works by Chekhov and Shakespeare, while on the big screen he worked with directors such as Marco Bellocchio.
In 1977, he shot Il gabbiano, where he showed that his range went far beyond mafia boardrooms. The international industry took its time to call, but when it did, it was with large-scale projects.
In 2016, he appeared in Live by Night under the direction of Ben Affleck. It was the prelude to his most memorable role in American cinema. In 2019, he played Enzo Ferrari in the movie Ford v Ferrari, where he shared scenes with Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
Restraint was his greatest weapon.
In 2021, he worked on the production Il derecho di felicità, centered on the relationship between a bookseller and an immigrant child. It was a small project that contrasted with his next major role in an action franchise. In 2023, he joined the cast of The Equalizer 3 to play Enzo Arisio alongside Denzel Washington.
His physical presence has always been enough to fill the frame without any need for grand gestures.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
In 2022, he also starred in the action film Il mio nome è vendetta for Netflix. He played Don Angelo Lo Bianco in a revenge story filmed mainly in Turin and Trentino. The film reached the platform's top 10 globally in more than 90 countries during its release month.
The production had an estimated budget of 10 million euros.
