Richard Madden was born in Elderslie, a Scottish village where acting seemed an unlikely path for a boy struggling with extreme shyness. At age eleven, he joined a local theater program just to build some confidence. His first role came in 2000 with the series Barmy Aunt Boomerang. But after that, the industry forgot about him for nearly a decade.
He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland while working precarious jobs to pay rent in Glasgow. During those training years he focused on classical theater and took part in productions of Romeo and Juliet at the Globe Theatre in London.
He was getting by on very little.
In 2011 the production of Game of Thrones was looking for an actor who could embody Robb Stark's integrity. Madden landed the role and spent three years filming in the icy landscapes of Northern Ireland. Shooting the famous Red Wedding in 2013 was so intense that the actor flew back to London crying on the plane. He had to shake off the character after years of total identification with the Stark house.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015 he played Prince Kit in Cinderella under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. The costume was so tight that he could barely breathe during the dance scenes. But his real critical recognition came in 2018 with Bodyguard. The BBC series drew massive audiences, and Madden won a Golden Globe for his performance as David Budd.
He refused to use stunt doubles for most of the action scenes during filming. Nearly 17 million viewers watched the series finale in the UK alone. Madden faced suffocating media pressure that put him on every list of possible next James Bond.
But he preferred to seek out projects where physical appearance was not the only driving force.
In 2019, he played John Reid, manager and lover of Elton John, in Rocketman. It was a risky role because it broke away from the action hero image audiences expected from him. That same year, he had a brief appearance in 1917, the Sam Mendes film that won three Academy Awards.
Marvel recruited him in 2021 to play Ikaris in Eternals. The production cost 200 million dollars and forced the actor to spend months hanging from wires to simulate the character's flight. It was an exhausting technical experience (often shooting on natural locations in Fuerteventura) that divided the franchise's fans.
In 2023 he starred in Citadel for Amazon Prime Video. The series had a budget inflated by reshoots that exceeded 300 million dollars. Industry players now prefer big espionage bets over small-scale dramas.
And the pace didn't let up.
In 2024 he starred in the thriller Killer Heat, shot on the island of Crete. The screenplay is based on a story by Jo Nesbø, and the production ended with a tight budget of 40 million euros. Filming in Greece took exactly 42 days of outdoor work under constant sun.
