Richard Rober died after hitting a tree on Santa Monica Boulevard. It was June 16, 1952, and his career was at a point of great activity within the B-movie industry.
He was 42 years old.
Before Hollywood, he worked on the Broadway stage. He played Jud Fry in the original production of Oklahoma! in 1943. That role gave him his ticket to the California studios, which were looking for men with physical presence and a voice that didn't tremble in front of the camera. His name soon began to circulate in casting offices.
And she made it happen.
In 1948 he signed a contract with Warner Bros, but his face was better suited to independent low-budget productions. He worked on Port of New York in 1949 alongside a young Yul Brynner. Rober didn't seek absolute stardom on the neon-lit posters. Because Rober understood that film noir didn't need clean-cut heroes but tired men who lent the plot an immediate credibility.
The Well is his most notable work from 1951. He plays the sheriff of a town divided by racism and social tension after a young girl disappears. The film cost just under $450,000 and is studied as an example of narrative tension without visual artifice.
But his career wasn't limited to dark alleys and police interrogations. In 1952 he shot April in Paris opposite Doris Day. It was a shift toward musical comedy that he never got to see finished on the big screen.
His last credit was The Devil Makes Three.
The premiere of this film took place months after his funeral. The car accident in Santa Monica happened just a few blocks from his home.
