The stunt double who didn't know he was one

Robert Kovacs lived among horses and weathered wooden sets in the Almería desert. He had no agents and no red-carpet ambitions. He earned his living as a stuntman at the Fort Bravo theme park (in Tabernas), performing gunfights for tourists searching for the trail of Sergio Leone.

Luck found him against a wooden wall.

Director Rene Perez spotted a photo of Kovacs at the set's bar and thought he was seeing a ghost. Charles Bronson had died in 2003, but this man who was mucking out stables had the same jaw and that same weary gaze. Perez quickly convinced him to travel to the United States and shoot his first movie.

The resemblance was so extreme that it bordered on the unsettling.

The borrowed voice trick

In 2017, he starred in From Hell to the Wild West under the direction of Perez. The California director was not looking for a method actor but for a physical presence that could revive the B-movie action cinema of the eighties. But the language barrier was a serious problem for the project's credibility.

Bronzi barely spoke English, and his thick Hungarian accent shattered the illusion of the tough guy from Pennsylvania. So in 2018, for the release of Death Kiss, the production made a drastic technical decision. They hired a voice-over actor to replace all his lines and mimic the gravelly tone of the real Bronson.

And the gamble paid off among nostalgic video store fans.

Because the niche audience wasn't looking for grand dramatic performances. They wanted to see a man of few words dispensing justice with a large-caliber pistol. In 2019 he shot Once Upon a Time in Deadwood, where the marketing focused entirely on his supernatural features.

A niche industry in the desert

In 2021, he appeared in The Gardener alongside Gary Daniels. It was one of the few times he stepped away from pure Western territory and into the realm of domestic home-invasion thrillers. But the narrative patterns stayed the same: a lonely man with a dark past who must protect a family.

His production pace didn't slow down in the following years. In 2022 he shot Exorcist Vengeance, mixing action with religious horror. On this film, the visual effects budget was so tight that most of the post-production was done in low-cost studios in Eastern Europe.

The film The Seven from 2022 was released directly to the US home market without a theatrical release. The production cost per shooting day did not exceed fifteen thousand dollars.
