Romeo Santos

Anthony Santos never planned to be a supporting actor. In 2015, he appeared on screen for just three minutes in Furious 7, sharing a scene with Vin Diesel and Jordana Brewster. It wasn't a dramatic revelation, but pure commercial calculation. Hollywood needed the Hispanic audience at the box office, and the singer wanted to see how the technical machinery of a multibillion-dollar franchise worked.

He walked off the set with another idea in mind.

The business of turning bachata into movies

The son of a Dominican bricklayer and a Puerto Rican mother, Santos grew up in the Bronx listening to classic salsa and boleros. With the group Aventura, he broke the genre's traditional mold by introducing processed acoustic guitars, bilingual lyrics and contemporary R&B rhythms. In 2002, his song Obsesión topped the sales charts in half a dozen European countries, including Italy and Spain.

But the singer understood very early on that recorded music was only half the pie. When he disbanded the group in 2011 to release Formula, Vol. 1, he designed his tours as cinematic productions, with giant screens, pyrotechnic effects and narrative arcs on stage.

In 2014, he sold out Yankee Stadium for two nights in a row, drawing more than 80,000 fans. No Latin artist had ever headlined that sports venue solo.

From gas station cameo to streaming deals

In 2016, he tried his luck in family animation, lending his voice to the character Early Bird in The Angry Birds Movie. It was a minor role, but it helped him join American actors' unions and learn how royalties work in voice dubbing. Santos never takes a creative step without controlling intellectual property rights.

So he decided to produce on his own.

In 2021, he signed with WarnerMedia for the documentary Romeo Santos: King of Bachata and the concert film Romeo Santos: Utopia Live from MetLife Stadium for the HBO Max platform. Both productions featured a deployment of 18 live cameras and cinema-grade lenses. He wasn't looking for a home video for loyal fans, but a visual document with industrial polish that would legitimize a genre the Dominican elite had marginalized for decades.

Controlling the Development Accounts

Through his own company, Chimby Films, he made the definitive leap into large-scale fiction development. In 2022, he struck a deal with Amazon Studios and the production company 3Pas Studios to bring the film adaptation of the novel Never Look Back to the screen.

The project was designed as a reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set on the streets of the Bronx. The production budget exceeded 40 million dollars. Santos took on executive producing and oversaw the original soundtrack, selecting every musical cue and managing the publishing contracts with corporate precision.

In film, scheduling delays can devour financial returns. During development, four initial treatments were scrapped before the final screenplay was approved, pushing preproduction costs 12 percent above the forecast set in the original contract.
