Ron Livingston is not the typical poster star who seeks constant attention. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1967. He studied at Yale and honed his craft on the Chicago theater scene before Hollywood figured out what to do with his look of existential weariness.
In 1999, he starred in Office Space under the direction of Mike Judge. The movie made only ten million dollars in its initial theatrical release. It was a commercial failure nobody saw coming at the time.
But the home video market rescued it from total oblivion. His character, Peter Gibbons, captured the apathy of the cubicle worker at the end of the century. Livingston has a rare ability to seem like someone who would rather be anywhere else.
Audiences connected with his cynicism.
In 2001 he made the leap to war drama with Band of Brothers. He played Captain Lewis Nixon in a production by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination that same year.
Livingston often inhabits characters who walk the edge of apathy or vulnerability. In 2002, he appeared in Sex and the City as Jack Berger. His exit from the series via a sticky note is still one of the most talked-about moments among TV audiences.
He took supporting roles in major horror productions such as The Conjuring in 2013. There he played Roger Perron in front of James Wan's cameras. The film surpassed 319 million dollars in worldwide box office.
And his career hasn't stopped at mainstream films.
He took part in independent projects such as Drinking Buddies in 2013, where he explored pure improvisation. His schedule has always mixed studio paychecks with the creative risk of low-budget films.
Between 2017 and 2020, he starred in Loudermilk for the Audience network. In this series, he played a rehab counselor with an insufferable personality. It was a return to the sharp comedy he has always handled best.
In 2023 he joined the DC Comics universe in the film The Flash. He replaced Billy Crudup in the role of Henry Allen (the lead character's father). It was a complicated shoot that faced several delays before reaching theaters.
He has lived in Los Angeles for decades.
He is married to actress Rosemarie DeWitt, whom he met on the set of a television series in 2009. They have two adopted daughters and keep an extremely low public profile by California standards.
The production of The Flash had an estimated budget of 200 million dollars.
