Rose Williams had no Plan B when she quit selling shoes at a store on Dover Street to audition for casting calls in London. Her mother worked in the costume department of various productions, and that constant contact with fabrics shaped her first view of the craft. She didn't attend a conventional drama school because she preferred to learn on the job.
The learning was hands-on and down in the mud.
In 2014 she landed a small role in the series Casualty and shortly after moved to Toronto to shoot Reign. There she played Princess Claude of Valois for three full seasons. It was an intense shoot of 22 episodes per year that gave her the experience she needed to handle the pressure of major American studios. Her salary on that first contract barely covered the rent in one of the most expensive areas of the Canadian city.
The opportunity that changed her career came in 2019 with Sanditon. Playing Charlotte Heywood in the adaptation of Jane Austen's unfinished work required her to lead an international cast at just 25 years old. The series was initially canceled by the ITV network, but fan outcry on social media led to two more seasons being produced in 2022 and 2023.
Williams decided her character would not be the typical passive romantic heroine. So she reworked the script to bring a physical energy that clashed with the stiffness of the Regency era. And the bet paid off with young audiences.
But success in period television didn't stop her.
In 2021, she sought to move away from period drama with The Power. This horror film is set in a London hospital during the blackouts of 1974, and Williams carries nearly the entire narrative weight of the movie. British critics praised her ability to convey anguish without resorting to the easy scream.
Nearly all of the footage takes place in total darkness.
That same year she appeared in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, playing Pamela Penrose. The contrast between psychological horror and gentle comedy showed that Williams prefers not to get stuck in a single visual register. Genre film seems to be her favorite refuge when she looks for independent projects.
In 2023, she starred in Locked In for Netflix alongside Famke Janssen. The script demanded absolute restraint and a constant mirror game between the roles of victim and tormentor. Williams shot much of her scenes at an isolated mansion, where the tense atmosphere carried through the screen thanks to the freezing temperatures outside.
Silence is her best weapon.
In 2024, she voiced one of the main characters in the animated project That Christmas under the direction of Simon Otto. This work marked her first professional foray into high-end voice acting after years focused on physical expression. In 2025, she joined new European productions that aim to capitalize on her dramatic profile in contemporary settings.
Filming her first horror movie lasted only 25 days with fourteen-hour workdays.
