Ross Butler was born in Singapore in 1990, but his story has nothing exotic about it in Hollywood offices. He grew up in Virginia under the pressure of a stable future in biomolecular engineering. College was a formality that lasted barely one academic year before the actor decided his place was on the West Coast.
He arrived in Los Angeles at twenty with one fixed idea in his head. He wasn't looking for the easy path of TV commercials or advertising modeling. But he had to start from the bottom with minor roles on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon just to pay the rent.
College lasted barely one year.
In 2013 he landed his first real lines of dialogue in the TV movie The Gateway Life. It wasn't a massive hit, but it taught him how the industry worked from the inside. In that environment, patience is often more valuable than raw talent.
In 2017 he found himself in an enviable yet dangerous position. He was part of the cast of Riverdale and 13 Reasons Why at the same time. Filming schedules collapsed, and producers demanded an immediate decision from him.
He had to choose between Reggie Mantle's charisma and Zach Dempsey's dramatic weight. He stuck with the Netflix series because the script handled suicide and bullying from a perspective he truly cared about. So Charles Melton took his place in the The CW series while Butler became a globally recognized face.
And the gamble paid off.
His role in 13 Reasons Why lasted four seasons until 2020. During that time, the actor handled fame with a discretion unusual for young people of his generation. But his ultimate goal was always to break into the big screen with roles that didn't depend on his age.
Butler always knew his look should not limit him to the roles the industry reserves for Asian actors. He refused to audition for characters that perpetuated stereotypes of brilliant students or martial arts experts. Before accepting any job, he required that the character's ethnic background be an detail irrelevant to the plot.
His role as the captain of the football team was a statement of intent. He wanted to show that a surname like his could lead the high school in fiction without relying on a storyline built around his roots. This stance opened doors in action productions, where racial typecasting was usually much stricter.
In 2019 he entered the DC Comics universe with the movie Shazam!, playing the adult version of Eugene Choi. He reprised the role in the 2023 sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. These projects let him balance teen drama with big-budget franchise filmmaking.
Professional maturity led him to look beyond pure acting. In 2021 he began getting involved in executive production so he could control the kinds of stories that landed on his desk. He didn't want to wait for the phone to ring with the perfect offer.
He appeared in the movie Perfect Addiction, released in 2023, where he explored action cinema and sports romance. He also lent his voice to the animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, directed by Zack Snyder. But his real interest shifted toward creating his own content.
The market got the message quickly.
In 2024 he joined the cast of Dead Boy Detectives to keep expanding his presence in fantasy genre work. His production company Grip and Rip now handles the development of several original scripts in California. Filming of his latest project in 2025 was financed with a fixed budget of twelve million dollars.
