Ryo Yoshizawa won the Right-on award from the Amuse agency in 2009, beating out more than 30,000 hopefuls. He wasn't chasing fame or driven by an irresistible artistic urge, but he needed the prize money to cover his expenses. He entered the industry for purely financial reasons, and that pragmatic honesty defines the way he works.
The industry quickly labeled him as just another pretty face.
His time on Kamen Rider Fourze in 2011 was the obligatory toll for any aspiring young idol in Japan. In that series, he played Ryusei Sakuta, a role that demanded martial arts choreography and a physical intensity that bordered on caricature. But there he learned to master the timing of physical comedy and the discipline of grueling fourteen-hour daily shoots.
Before landing big-budget roles, he spent years in minor supporting parts in low-profile school series. And his bet on staying in the background paid off.
In 2017, he accepted the role of Sougo Okita in the live-action adaptation of Gintama. The character was sadistic, with a bazooka on his shoulder and a blank stare that fit the director Yuichi Fukuda's absurd humor. The film performed well at the box office and broke the image of harmless heartthrob that fashion magazines were trying to project onto him.
Then Kingdom arrived in 2019.
To play the characters Piao and Ying Zheng, he had to lose weight and adjust his posture to convey the authority of a future emperor. He won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actor for that role. Critics stopped talking about his physique and focused instead on his ability to hold his own against veteran Japanese action film stars.
But success didn't lead him to seek refuge in comfortable projects.
In 2021, he filmed the NHK historical drama Seiten wo Tsuke, in which he played Shibusawa Eiichi. The shoot lasted 50 episodes, and he had to embody the celebrity from age 13 to age 91. Projects like this, known as Taiga dramas, often wear down young actors through physical exhaustion and media overexposure.
In 2024, he took part in The Parades, a Netflix production directed by Michihito Fujii. The film's tone is measured and melancholic, a register that lets him move away from the explosions of his earlier commercial work. He is an actor who prefers silence on set to public relations with the crew.
That same year, he premiered in Kingdom: Return of the Great General.
The film closed a production cycle that began in 2018 and has generated multibillion-yen profits for the Toho studio. Yoshizawa commands one of the highest endorsement fees in Japan thanks to his ability to attract young audiences without generating tabloid controversy. His current management contract includes exclusivity clauses that limit his appearances on variety shows to preserve an air of professional mystery.
