Ryota Takeuchi has a voice that seems to rise straight from the underground. It's a deep bass, an uncommon range in the Japanese voice acting industry, where mid and high tones usually dominate youthful characters. But Takeuchi wasn't looking to fit the mold of the high school hero.
In 2010, he began appearing steadily in the credits of productions such as Katanagatari or Bakuman. They weren't lead roles. They were sharp, brief appearances that gave weight to scenes that needed immediate authority.
And the market noticed soon enough.
His physique also breaks the mold. Standing nearly six feet seven inches tall, his rib cage gives him a projection of air that other voice actors have to force with technical equalization. Takeuchi simply steps up to the microphone and speaks.
In 2017, his career changed when he accepted the role of Elias Ainsworth in The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It's a complex character because he has no human face. Since he is a fixed animal skull, the entire emotional weight rests on the modulation of his voice.
Takeuchi worked the character from absolute restraint. He made a supernatural being come across as vulnerable without raising his volume or a single octave across all twenty-four episodes of the first season.
But success didn't pull him away from character supporting roles. Takeuchi understands that in the anime industry, supporting actors are the ones who sustain the believability of a fantasy world.
Consistency pays the bills.
In 2022, he returned to the world of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War to voice characters who demand controlled physical aggression. His ability to move from a whisper to a military command is what keeps him on the most demanding casting lists in Tokyo.
In 2024, he voiced Baek Yoonho in the adaptation of Solo Leveling. It's a character who radiates power, and Takeuchi used a raspy tone he hadn't explored as much in his earlier work. His range reached 85 decibels during the recording sessions for the most intense battle scenes.
During 2023, he returned to the role of Elias for the second season of his cult-favorite series. The challenge was different because the character was no longer a mystery to viewers. So he decided to soften the endings of his sentences to show the magician's domestic evolution.
Before recording, he usually studies the drawing's physique to understand how that body would breathe if it were real.
His move away from the Arts Vision agency to join 81 Produce years ago opened the door to more varied contracts, including documentary narration and big-budget video games. By 2025, his work on animation projects for global platforms had settled at four titles per quarter.
The studio's technical crew often notes that Takeuchi rarely needs more than two takes to nail a line of over thirty words without losing his breath.
