From the wrestling mat to the big screen

Sanya Malhotra arrived in Bombay with no famous surname and no industry connections. In 2016, she landed the role of Babita Kumari in Dangal after months of brutal physical tests that included real injuries and professional wrestling training. The film broke worldwide box office records and put the spotlight on an actress who until then had only aspired to dance in TV commercials.

But the massive success of her debut didn't push her to sign just any advertising deal. She preferred to wait. In 2018, she appeared in Badhaai Ho and showed she could carry a slice-of-life comedy without relying on the usual Bollywood star mannerisms. Her training as a professional dancer also gives her a body control that makes camera work in close-ups much easier.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2019, she worked with Ritesh Batra on Photograph alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It was a complete change of pace toward slower, quieter arthouse cinema. international critics noticed her ability to convey emotion without big monologues. In that project, silence mattered more than dialogue.

The risk of silent roles

Many actors fear the void of independent production after a commercial blockbuster. Sanya Malhotra did the opposite. In 2020, she appeared in the ensemble film Ludo, directed by Anurag Basu. Her portrayal of a woman caught in a moral dilemma before her wedding was one of the highlights of a complex, fragmented narrative.

Nobody expected her in action cinema.

In 2021, she starred in Pagglait, where she carried the entire narrative weight as a young widow who is unable to mourn her husband's death. The film premiered directly on digital platforms and racked up millions of viewing hours in its first weeks. That was when it became clear her name could sell a project on its own, without a male lead beside her.

But in 2023, her production volume changed for good. She appeared in Jawan alongside Shah Rukh Khan, and shortly after in Sam Bahadur. In the latter, she played Silloo Manekshaw under the direction of Meghna Gulzar. It was a technical challenge, since the character had to be aged across several decades of real Indian history.

Box office and the weight of the name

In 2023, the film Kathal let her return to satirical comedy, playing a police inspector in a rural setting. The plot revolved around the theft of exotic fruits. It sounds like a simple premise, but the script hid a sharp social critique of bureaucracy and the caste system. Her choice of roles follows a logic of quality over constant exposure.

Sanya Malhotra manages her career from a small office in the Juhu neighborhood. She rarely attends industry parties unless it's strictly necessary for promotion. In 2024, she worked on Mrs., the adaptation of the acclaimed film The Great Indian Kitchen. The shoot focused on capturing domestic oppression through very long, grueling single-take shots for the actors.

Filming for her movies usually lasts between 45 and 60 days on average.

In 2025, she is set to release Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari under Dharma Productions. Her contract for this film includes specific clauses on the use of stunt doubles and rehearsal time for the musical sequences. In 2024, the production design budget for her project Baby John exceeded seventy million rupees just for building the main sets.
