Sara Carbonero never planned to step in front of the camera for fiction. When Telecinco Cinema, in 2010, was looking for a familiar face to lend journalistic credibility to the comedy Amigos…, all it took was going down two floors at the Fuencarral studios.

It amounted to just eight seconds of footage in which she played a neutral version of herself in front of a newsroom camera.

And that was enough to spark a recurring debate.

Born in Corral de Almaguer in 1984, she put her studies at Universidad Complutense on hold after receiving a contract following her internship at Radio Marca during 2004. She then worked at Cadena SER and in 2007 made the leap to La Sexta, covering broadcasts such as the Eurobasket. But her move to Mediaset in April 2009 is what upended her professional routine.

During her coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, media attention blew past any earlier technical benchmark. Every shot drew international comment, and her on-screen image fueled debates about the line between sports journalism and mass consumption.

The false refuge of the small screen

After that brief film appearance, television fiction came calling. In autumn of 2011, he took part in a cameo in the Spanish adaptation of the comedy Cheers, produced by Plural Entertainment for Telecinco.

There she shared the screen with Antonio Resines and Alberto San Juan without straying from the register viewers recognized every day. The public didn't demand a dramatic character built from scratch, but rather a confirmation of the visual strength of someone who drew more than two million viewers to their TV sets every midday.

Nobody expected a method performance.

So business ventures took priority over any theater or film temptations. In 2015, she founded the fashion brand Slowlove with journalist Isabel Jiménez, and in 2021 she closed the sale of the majority stake to the textile group Tendam, while keeping creative direction of the fashion catalogs.

Union friction in the mixing room

The real sound test came far from the usual studio sets.

The industry reacted harshly and immediately. Veteran performers publicly denounced what they saw as a commercial maneuver in the promotional lineup that took space away from professionals trained in vocal timing and modulation.

Despite the controversy in specialized forums, the film earned $250 million at the international box office.

Between 2021 and 2022, she combined that on-air work with a return to radio to host the interview segment Que siga el baile on Radio Marca. She also appeared in the music video for the song A poco by Tu Otra Bonita in 2021 and had a cameo in the video for Raising Voices by singer Aitana.

El montaje final de The Bad Guys consumió cuatro jornadas de registro en los estudios de sonido de Madrid para cuadrar las réplicas de su personaje antes del estreno en salas el 18 de marzo de 2022.

Trivia about Sara Carbonero

Things you probably didn't know about Sara Carbonero

While still in her third year of journalism studies, she started as an intern at Radio Marca and was hired just six months later, before finishing her degree.
At Radio Marca, she didn't just cover sports news: she also contributed to the morning show «Balón desastre» and hosted the music segment «Supermarca» solo.
Between 2010 and 2012, she presented Premium Calcio, an Italian channel specializing in soccer, a TV stint she carried out outside Spain.
Her first job at Telecinco was covering the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa as a reporter, before presenting the sports segment of the network's newscasts.
She crossed paths with Cristina Pardo at La Sexta when both were just starting out in television; years later they looked back on that period as a time when they were still learning the craft.
Her friendship with Isabel Jiménez gave rise to the name "ISARA," a blend of their names that they use to refer to their personal and professional relationship.
After moving to Porto, she requested a leave of absence from Telecinco. The change of country allowed her to regain some of her privacy after the massive media attention that followed her relationship with Iker Casillas.
During her time with Casillas, she met Alejandro Sanz, whom she had admired for years, and over time the two became friends.
In 2010, she was interviewing Iker Casillas live after the World Cup final when the goalkeeper interrupted her to kiss her; the moment became one of the most memorable TV scenes of the tournament.
After leaving sports journalism, she channeled her interest in fashion into creating a label with Isabel Jiménez.
