Sara Mortensen was born in Paris in 1979, with her heritage split between France and Norway. Her mother is actress Elisabeth Mortensen and her father is a visual artist. She studied Art History at the Sorbonne, but the stage ended up winning out.
She joined the Cours Florent in 2001 to learn the craft from the ground up.
For years she moved from one supporting role to the next in short films and French television. There was no miraculous discovery in a café and no sudden stroke of luck. She worked hard while waiting for a role that would let her show she had more to offer than a pretty face.
In 2012 she joined the cast of Plus belle la vie to play Coralie Blain. It was a period of intensive learning, with daily shoots and a level of media exposure she had never experienced before. The show is an institution in France, and Mortensen stayed with the project for seven years.
And then she decided to leave.
She left the series in 2019 because she needed other creative challenges. Many people thought it was a mistake to give up a steady paycheck from such a stable production. But that same year the script for Astrid et Raphaëlle arrived, and her career took off on a much bigger scale.
Playing Astrid Nielsen was an exhausting technical challenge. The character is an autistic documentarian who works in the archive of the criminal police. Mortensen spent months studying the behavior and information-processing style of people on the autism spectrum.
She made the character far from a caricature through absolute restraint in her gestures.
The series drew audiences of five million viewers during prime time in France in its first seasons. In Spain, broadcasts on specialty channels and digital platforms noticeably expanded its fan base.
In 2022 she appeared in the thriller L’Abîme, bringing Elsa Lacaze to life. It was a necessary change of register that moved her away from the rigidity of Astrid. The shoot took place in locations across the south of France under considerable physical strain due to the demands of the script.
The French industry now sees her as a safe bet for prime time.
She balances television with lower-budget film projects that carry greater dramatic weight. In 2023 she shot Conscience under the direction of Gaël Leforestier. She's a professional who prefers the quiet of the set to the red carpets of the French capital.
By 2024, the production of the fifth season of Astrid et Raphaëlle had confirmed her position in the European industry. Her contract stipulates shooting days that often exceed ten hours a day on location.
In 2025 filming began on the sixth installment of the crime series, with a budget of more than five million euros per block of episodes. Mortensen keeps her residence in Paris, where she manages her own image contracts.
Filming her most recent TV movie in 2026 required three million euros in liability insurance because of the use of stunt performers in dangerous scenes.
