Sara Thompson didn't get into acting by a stroke of luck in a Los Angeles café. Her foundation is the physical discipline of professional ballet in Canada. That training gave her a mental structure she applies to every shoot. In 2017, she landed the role of Molly Ross in the series Burden of Truth, and that's where her steady relationship with the camera began.
She spent four seasons on this legal drama alongside Kristin Kreuk. Filming took place in her native Winnipeg. But working close to home didn't lessen the intensity of her preparation. Thompson often says dance taught her to endure pain and fifteen-hour workdays.
Technique always comes before emotion.
In 2018, she appeared in the film I Still See You. It was a supporting role in a supernatural thriller that quietly passed through theaters. But it taught her how productions with bigger budgets worked.
The year 2019 marked a big jump in her international visibility. She joined the cast of the sixth season of The 100 to bring Josephine Lightbourne to life. The technical challenge was enormous because she shared the character with the series' lead. She had to mirror another actress's movements so the body-possession storyline would feel believable.
She spent weeks studying recordings of her co-stars. She wanted to copy the way they walked and their nervous tics before stepping onto set. Critics praised her ability to be unsettling without falling into the cliché of the teen villain.
And the American market took notice of her.
At the end of 2019, she shot The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story. It's a TV movie based on a real kidnapping case. Thompson played the lead, and the project performed very well in Lifetime's audience ratings. The production demanded a constant dramatic intensity that took her away from her usual supporting roles.
Peacock cast her in 2021 to join One of Us Is Lying. Filming for the first season moved to New Zealand to avoid the pandemic restrictions of the time. There, she played Vanessa Clark for two full seasons. The character was a popularity-obsessed student hiding several layers of insecurity.
The series was canceled in 2023 after airing its second batch of episodes. The ending left some storylines open in the original script. But Thompson had already fulfilled her contract and was looking for projects with a less teen-focused tone.
In 2024, she appeared in the short film The Gaze. It's a brief piece that explores the aesthetic pressure in the entertainment industry. Thompson often chooses these small projects over big productions to stay connected with more experimental filmmaking.
The Canadian industry remains her main home base.
Before accepting a role, she reads the script looking for the character's logical flaw. Flat figures don't interest her. In 2025, her production schedule focused on independent projects shot in Toronto. Her social media following tops 400,000 users, though she keeps a low profile about her private life. The distribution deal for her latest independent film closed at three million dollars.
