The Inspector Who Knew How to Laugh

Seda Bakan wasn't desperately chasing a camera career when she was studying International Trade at Sakarya University. Her academic training pointed toward a future in offices and logistics, but fate ended up leading her to television studios in Istanbul. The change of direction was not a teenage whim but a decision she made after stepping onto her first film sets.

In 2010, she landed the role of Eda in Behzat Ç. Bir Ankara Polisiyesi. That police drama broke the mold of Turkish television with its raw realism. Bakan played an inspector in a purely male environment and made her character more than just the friendly face of the department.

She never needed gimmicks to stand out.

Her comedy breakthrough came with Kardeş Payı in 2014. Audiences discovered that the actress had an effortless command of absurd humor. She shared the screen with Ahmet Kural and Murat Cemcir in a production that is still cited today as a benchmark for the genre in Turkey. The show was a massive ratings hit, and the industry realized her range was much broader than expected.

Film also claimed her talent. In 2018, she appeared in Öldür Beni Sevgilim alongside Murat Boz. The movie performed well at the box office and established her name as a reliable commercial draw for national studios seeking immediate returns.

The leap to global streaming platforms

Her international reach took off in 2022 with the release of Zeytin Ağacı on Netflix. The series explored family dynamics and the emotional drama of three friends. Bakan brought Leyla to life, a character who balanced heavy drama with the lightness needed to let the plot breathe.

And the gamble paid off.

The global market was no longer a pipe dream for Ottoman-era actors. In 2024, she returned to her role for the second season of the Netflix series directed by Burcu Alptekin. During that same period, she worked on the shoot of Esas Oğlan, a production for the platform Gain, where she shares the spotlight with singer Hadise.

Her stint on Mucize Doktor in 2020 was also significant. She played Ferda Eranç, and her arrival midway through the series gave a boost to the medical storylines that were starting to run dry. She proved she could step into ongoing projects and take control of the narrative within a few episodes.

Bakan keeps a public profile far from the scandals of Istanbul's gossip press. She married musician Ali Erel in 2014 and has managed her time as a mother without her career suffering long breaks. This personal stability is reflected in a much more selective and measured choice of scripts.

The international distribution deal for her latest projects guarantees her presence on screens in more than 190 countries. The shoot of her latest streaming series came with a budget exceeding several million Turkish lira per episode.
