Josep Sergi Capdevila Querol sang radio ads and livened up village fiesta dances with verbena orchestras before inventing a stage name. The solution came from swapping the syllables of Maldà, his father's hometown in the Urgell region of Lleida. That's how Dalma was born.
In 1989, he recorded his first studio album, Esa chica es mía, funded by a modest Catalan record label. It sold more than fifty thousand copies with barely any promotion on the major national radio stations.
And the gamble paid off right away.
In 1991, Televisión Española sent him to Rome to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest with Bailar pegados. That orchestral ballad with classical string arrangements finished in fourth place after scoring 119 points at the Cinecittà studios. It was a meteoric rise for a kid raised in Sabadell who was competing against European delegations with budgets ten times larger.
The album Sintiéndonos la piel flew off store shelves that same year. But Spain's music industry in the 1990s devoured balladeers with savage appetite. As melodic pop began losing ground to dance rhythms manufactured in Miami, the singer went on to release several records that failed to meet the commercial expectations of his new record label.
So by the end of that decade he had to rethink the sound of his recordings to avoid fading into irrelevance.
Around 2009, the Spanish record market was going through a general sales collapse, and his catalog seemed relegated to the circuit of has-been stars. Italian producer Claudio Guidetti then proposed a risky move: select popular pieces from the Italian songbook and adapt them into Spanish while keeping the analog strings. They recorded the project at the Milan studios of Vía Cadore.
The result was Vía Dalma in 2010. That album earned six platinum records and sold hundreds of thousands of copies in a country where record stores were closing for weeks at a time.
The public bought the formula without a second thought.
His vocal color fit naturally into the repertoire of Umberto Tozzi or Toto Cutugno without any need to force the rasp. The record label milked the formula with Vía Dalma II in 2011 and with Cadore 33 in 2013, an album in which he recorded new material backed by the same Italian instrumentation.
In 2019, he marked three decades in the business with the compilation 30… y tanto, revisiting his classic songs with programmed beats and sharper guitars. That review project served as a technical bridge to new production partnerships.
In 2023 he released Sonríe porque estás en la foto, an album produced by Fernando Boix and Pablo Cebrián, among others. The arrangements aimed for bright rhythms close to the 1980s synth pop sound, moving at times away from the orchestral format to try synthetic frequencies in the chorus.
And he kept the loyalty of his audiences on every tour.
In November 2025, he released Ritorno a Vía Dalma, produced by Pablo Díez and Alex Perea, in which he returned to recording Italian covers. For the final mix of that album in 2025, the engineers applied a three-decibel compression to his vocal track to tame the raspy harmonics of his voice against the orchestral wall of sound.
