Serkan Keskin was born in İzmit in the autumn of 1977. He was not chasing quick fame from Turkish export soap operas or lucrative advertising contracts. His path began at the local theater in his hometown before he moved to Istanbul to train at Müjdat Gezen's arts center.
Television was not the original plan.
In 2002, he took part in founding Semaver Kumpanya. This theater group settled in the Koca Mustafa Paşa neighborhood, where Keskin learned that acting is a craft of repetition and hard work. He worked as an actor and stage director for years before the general public knew how to pronounce his first name.
But the screen industry eventually came calling thanks to sheer technical persistence. He took part in small productions and supporting roles where he refined a dry, direct style. His theater training helped him avoid the performance habits that often hold back actors who only know television sets.
In 2011, he accepted the role of Ismail Abi in the surreal series Leyla ile Mecnun. He was not a lead character in the initial scripts. But Keskin gave him an absurd humanity that connected with a generation of viewers tired of traditional romantic dramas. He wore brightly colored suits and waved at ships that never reached the port.
Nobody expected a man in shiny suits to define an era.
That series changed television storytelling in Turkey. Keskin's humor was built on everyday tragedy disguised as a bad joke. Because the actor understands that comedy is just drama at a different speed. During the three original seasons of the show, he refused to give up his theater commitments despite sixteen-hour shooting days.
In 2013, the series was abruptly canceled for political and social reasons. Keskin and the rest of the cast did not sit still. They formed a rock band called Leyla The Band to close the creative chapter and toured the country. It was a defensive move against industry censorship.
His move to prestige cinema came in 2018 under the direction of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. In the film Ahlat Ağacı, he played a local writer in a dialogue scene that lasts almost half an hour. It was a trial by fire. Ceylan is known for demanding dozens of takes for a single line, and Keskin kept up the pace without missing a beat.
Theater is his anchor.
In 2023, he joined the cast of Bambaşka Biri to play a detective with dark undertones. He was no longer the funny neighbor from the previous decade. At this stage his physique has changed and his on-screen gaze is much heavier. So casting directors began sending him scripts where silence matters more than dialogue.
During the first months of 2024, he focused his efforts on the stage production Hücreler. It is a large-scale theater production in which he plays a human nervous system alongside other actors he trusts. The show sold out its first season in under seventy-two hours in Istanbul.
In 2025, he plans to begin shooting a biographical production about actor Metin Akpınar. The project has a fixed independent production budget and will be filmed entirely on location in the European side of the city. The contract includes an exclusivity clause for the winter shooting months.
