Kang Seul-gi spent seven years locked away in the basements of SM Entertainment before the public first heard her voice. She entered the academy in 2007 after a public audition and endured as she watched other trainees leave or debut before her. That physical endurance ended up defining her stage technique.
In August 2014, she debuted with the group Red Velvet and the single Happiness. The Korean industry often grinds down artists who don't fit a rigid mold, but she kept a low profile that prioritized technical execution over the artificial charisma of social media.
And the gamble paid off.
During the Perfect Velvet era in 2017, international markets began to notice that her vocal range was not the usual one for manufactured pop. Her ability to hold complex notes while performing high-intensity choreography set her apart from the generic crowd of artists.
In 2019, she took part in the project The ReVe Festival, and her control over the group's image became more evident there. She didn't desperately seek the camera or force poses for the gallery. As a result, her presence began to carry more weight in the production credits for the choreography.
Sometimes silence says more than a shout.
In 2020, she formed the group's first sub-unit with Irene to release the mini album Monster. The music video racked up eleven million views in its first twenty-four hours and showed a dark aesthetic bordering on psychological horror films (a style she would later explore further on her own).
Fashion came knocking too. In 2021, the house Salvatore Ferragamo named her global ambassador after analyzing her impact on sales in the Asian market. But Seulgi didn't let the runways eat up her time in the recording studio.
Many expected a bright pop record for her solo debut, but she chose the path of suspense. In October 2022, she released 28 Reasons, and the result was a dense work with influences from raw R&B.
The album sold over 180,000 copies in its first week according to Hanteo data.
That same year, she joined the supergroup Got the Beat to show she could share space with veteran industry figures without losing her sonic identity. Her voice worked as the glue for productions that often tended to be excessive.
In November 2023, she returned with her group for the release of Chill Kill. The project stood out for its visual storytelling inspired by Korean folk horror, and critics praised her dramatic performance in the promotional clips. Seulgi was no longer just singing; now she was acting in front of the camera.
Her contract with the agency was renewed in 2023 under terms that give her greater creative freedom in her visual choices. The budget for her next solo production exceeds two billion won.
