Song Seung-heon wasn't looking for the camera. In 1995, he was working at a café in Seoul when a modeling agent offered him a chance to pose for the Storm jeans brand. That photo shoot alongside a then-unknown So Ji-sub sparked a quick shift from industrial design to television sets. He debuted in 1996 with the sitcom Three Guys and Three Girls, and audiences immediately connected with his screen presence.
It worked out better than expected.
The year 2000 marked a turning point with the release of Autumn in My Heart. The series reached a 46 percent audience share in South Korea and skyrocketed his name across the Asian continent. That tearjerker set the standard for what we now know as the Korean Wave. But massive fame brought scrutiny that the actor didn't always know how to handle.
In 2004, his career came to a forced halt due to a military service evasion scandal. Song Seung-heon tried to avoid the draft by claiming health problems that turned out to be false. The social pressure was so suffocating that he had to issue a public apology and enlist immediately. Those two years away allowed the public to let go of their resentment, and he matured as an actor.
That mistake nearly ended everything.
He returned in 2006 with a more serious profile, far from his teen heartthrob roles. In 2008, he starred in East of Eden, a big-budget epic of fifty episodes that earned him the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards. Although critics questioned the jury's decision, the ratings backed up his ability to carry epic revenge stories.
He founded his own agency in 2009 to manage his contracts without intermediaries. That independence allowed him to take risks on projects like Obsessed in 2014, a highly erotic film set during the Vietnam War. It was a risky bet because it broke with his clean image as a television idol. Still, the box office responded with more than one million viewers in its first weeks in theaters.
In 2018, he decided to explore the thriller genre with The Player and later with the fourth season of Voice in 2021. Pure action scripts replaced period romances. The actor understood that to survive in such a competitive industry, he had to step away from the romantic spotlight.
In 2023, he played the villain Ryu Seok in the dystopian series Black Knight, produced by Netflix.
The year 2024 brought the premiere of The Player 2: Master of Swindlers, directed by So Jae-hyun. The production had a larger technical budget than its predecessor and was shot mainly in large-scale urban locations. The international distribution deal for this sequel closed at record figures for the tvN network before its first episode aired.
