Sonja Bennett never expected that faking a pregnancy would be the key to saving her career in Canadian film. In the mid-2000s, the actress was accumulating supporting roles in horror films and television dramas shot in Vancouver. But the script for Preggoland in 2014 changed the game for her.
The industry often typecasts actresses once they cross the threshold of thirty. Bennett recognized this pattern early and decided that if nobody offered her the role of a lifetime, she would write it herself.
It was a survival decision.
On the set of Preggoland, she worked under director Jacob Tierney. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and secured an unusual international distribution deal for a low-budget independent comedy.
And it worked.
Before that success, Bennett was already a familiar face in cult series. She appeared in The Fog in 2005 and in the ensemble comedy Young People Fucking in 2007. The latter film sparked a political controversy in Canada over its public funding but ended up being a local box office hit.
Her ability to move between dark drama and sharp comedy allowed her to step up to more significant productions. In 2017, she joined the cast of Ghost Wars and later appeared in global hits such as Riverdale.
She isn't chasing mass stardom.
She prefers the stability of supporting roles with narrative weight in long-running series. In 2021, she began her run on Family Law, playing Abby Kozak for several consecutive seasons. As a result, her face has become a constant presence on North American broadcast television.
Bennett's work as a screenwriter was no one-day experiment. In 2019, she wrote episodes for Letterkenny and joined writers' rooms where irony is the main language. Combining acting with writing has given her complete control over her professional schedule.
In 2023, she took part in the HBO television adaptation of The Last of Us, playing a survivor in the Boston quarantine zone. It was a brief role, but it reached global audience peaks in one of the most expensive productions of that decade.
By 2024, her name appeared in the credits of Wild Cards, keeping up a steady work pace in British Columbia. Bennett lives in Vancouver and manages her projects from there without needing to move permanently to Los Angeles.
Her pay per episode on standard Canadian productions ranged from 5,000 to 15,000 dollars, according to the union scale of the time.
