Sophie Monk wasn't born in Australia, but she ended up as the face most recognizable on teenagers' binders in the early 2000s. In 1999, she auditioned for a show that aimed to create an artificial pop group. The result was Bardot.
That group broke sales records in its first week. But the commercial pop machine burns through its acts quickly, and the group broke up in 2002 after a couple of albums. Monk then decided her path lay in a solo career.
Released Calendar Girl in 2003 to try to move away from the coral doll image she had been given. The album blended pop with touches of opera and dance. It sold enough for Hollywood to take notice of her.
The industry was never kind to her.
She moved to Los Angeles with the goal of becoming a real actress. In 2006, she landed a role in Date Movie, a comedy that poked fun at every trope of the romantic comedy genre. There she played Andy, an exaggerated version of the femme fatale that casting directors saw in her look.
That same year, she appeared in Click alongside Adam Sandler. They were small roles that played on her image as a explosive blonde, but she always brought a touch of self-parody that kept her from being forgotten. She worked nonstop and kept filming without a break.
In 2009, she tried to change direction with horror movies in The Hills Run Red. It was a risky bet that didn't quite catch on at the international box office. Critics didn't know where to place a woman who went from crude jokes to agonized screams in the woods.
And the phone stopped ringing as often as it used to.
After a rollercoaster period in the United States, she decided to return to Australia to take back control of her story. In 2015, she won the fourth season of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia. That confirmed that audiences still connected with her direct, unfiltered personality.
But her big breakthrough came in 2017. She accepted the lead role in The Bachelorette Australia at a time when her love life was tabloid fodder. More than 1.6 million viewers tuned in for the season finale.
The experiment worked.
From there, her career focused on hosting major formats. In 2018, she became the host of Love Island Australia, a role she held for five consecutive seasons. Her style is dry and sharp.
In 2021, she took part in the Australian version of The Masked Singer under the costume of Dragonfly. She finished in fifth place. In 2023, she recorded the final season of Love Island at a villa in Mallorca under strict confidentiality conditions to prevent leaks to the digital press.
The production contract for the next stage of the show was signed for three additional seasons.
