In May 2009, a confidential NBA scouting report concluded that Wardell Stephen Curry II weighed 72 kilograms and lacked the physical strength needed to compete at the highest level. The report warned about an unorthodox shooting mechanic and a body too fragile for the professional physicality.
Fifteen years later, that small point guard had four championship rings with the Golden State Warriors and an Academy Award statuette displayed in a case in San Francisco.
Nobody gave him a chance.
American basketball was obsessed with the giants who dunked over the rim when Curry arrived in the league. The son of sharpshooter Dell Curry, he grew up in Charlotte locker rooms, absorbing shooting routines with almost military discipline.
But his ankles nearly derailed the project before it started. Between 2011 and 2012, he underwent a string of surgeries that forced his franchise to sign a below-market contract extension worth 44 million dollars over four seasons.
That cheap contract allowed the Warriors to build an unbeatable core around his wrist. Curry didn't challenge defenders with brute strength but with geometry, forcing opponents to guard him 30 feet from the basket.
In 2016, he became the first unanimously elected MVP in the history of the league. His obsession with that exact word shaped his next corporate move.
In 2018, he founded his own production company, Unanimous Media, together with executive Erick Peyton. They signed an initial development deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to fund projects centered on personal growth, faith and sports legacy.
Curry didn't want to be a simple absentee investor whose name appears in the credits. He was directly involved in reading script treatments and in seeking funding for independent projects that major studios had passed on.
In 2021, he served as executive producer of the documentary The Queen of Basketball, directed by Ben Proudfoot. The film tells the story of Lusia Harris, the pioneer who scored the first women's Olympic basket and was drafted in the men's NBA draft by the New Orleans Jazz in 1977.
In March 2022, the project won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject, beating industry giants.
And the move paid off perfectly.
In 2023, he teamed up with production company A24 and director Peter Nicks to premiere Stephen Curry: Underrated at the Sundance Film Festival. The film sidesteps the usual promotional documentary format to offer a raw portrait of his college years at Davidson and his obsession with finishing his degree fourteen years later.
Few elite athletes put up with cameras poking fun at their commercial status. Curry broke that unwritten rule by taking a leading role in a fictional film.
In 2024, he starred in the series Mr. Throwback for the Peacock streaming service. Created by David Caspe and co-starring Adam Pally, the satire uses the mockumentary format to present a caricatured Curry, consumed by the sports sponsorship business and the whims of fame.
Because the screen offered an escape from the physical wear of the court. His company expanded its catalog into adult animated television by partnering with Seth MacFarlane and Norman Lear on a new version of Good Times released on Netflix in 2024.
So the production company stopped being a secondary showcase and began operating as an independent studio with its own financial muscle.
In 2024, Unanimous Media renewed its first-look deal with NBCUniversal for a multimillion-dollar sum and moved its operational headquarters to Burbank, with four permanent post-production suites.
