Suzu Hirose (Shizuoka, 1998) has established herself as the most important figure of her generation in the Japanese film industry. What began as a promising modeling career for Seventeen magazine has grown into an acting career of unusual depth, making her the go-to muse of the most prestigious directors in contemporary Asian cinema.
From her debut, Hirose showed an innate ability to capture both the vulnerability and the strength of her characters. Her breakthrough to international fame came under the direction of Hirokazu Kore-eda in Our Little Sister (Umimachi Diary), a role that earned her the Japan Academy Prize for Rookie of the Year. This collaboration marked the start of an artistic partnership that would continue in The Third Murder, solidifying her reputation as a method actress capable of carrying complex dramas.
Over the past few years, Suzu has successfully made the transition from youth roles—such as the iconic Chihayafuru saga or the musical drama Your Lie in April—to far more mature and demanding performances. Her role in The Wandering Moon (Rurou no Tsuki), directed by Sang-il Lee, marked a critical turning point. Her portrayal of a woman coping with the traumas of her past earned unanimous praise from critics at international film festivals.
In the most recent stage of her career, Hirose has diversified her range, alternating auteur films with big-budget productions of emotional weight. She stars in The Water Flows to the Sea (Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru), where she plays a cynical, disillusioned woman, moving away from the bright image of her early days. Her collaboration with director Shunji Iwai on Kyrie no Uta also reaffirmed her ability to fit into poetic, melancholic visual worlds.
Her presence on television has also been essential in maintaining her status as a national star. Following the success of Natsuzora (the NHK's 100th morning drama), Hirose has starred in high-quality series with strong technical and narrative craft, such as the romantic drama Hold My Hand at Twilight (Yugure ni, Te wo Tsunagu), which captivated audiences with its on-screen chemistry and urban sensibility.
Looking ahead to the expansion of her career, Suzu Hirose has led one of the most ambitious projects in recent Japanese cinema: Yuki no Hana (Snow Flower). In this film, inspired by the famous song by Mika Nakashima, Hirose takes on a major dramatic challenge, playing a woman who searches for love under the shadow of a terminal illness across the landscapes of Finland. This work has become a milestone in her current filmography, showcasing her box office appeal and her dramatic range.
In addition, new projects have been confirmed that once again link her to European auteur cinema in co-productions with Japan, suggesting a growing interest on the actress's part in internationalizing her career beyond Asian borders. Suzu Hirose is not just a familiar face in advertising and fashion; she is, rightfully, the face of 21st-century Japanese cinema, an actress who has aged in front of the camera with an elegance and talent that seem to know no limits.
