In 1978, a two-year-old boy appeared on the set of The Mike Douglas Show swinging a golf club in front of Bob Hope and James Garner. It was no cute anecdote to entertain California families, but the precisely calculated prelude to a figure built to devour mass culture. Earl Woods did not raise an ordinary athlete. He created a media machine designed to win every time and to exploit any emotional weakness.
The trick was never to blink.
In April 1997, that storyline reached its peak when Woods won the Masters at just twenty-one years old. He tore apart the Georgia course with an insulting twelve-stroke lead over the runner-up. It was a televised beatdown that shattered global ratings and opened the doors to a game reserved for the white elite. And multinationals rushed to sign checks with endless zeros.
Over the following decade, Woods competed against the ghosts of the record books. He won the U.S. Open in 2000 by fifteen strokes and completed four majors in a row the following year. Nobody on television generated such collective hypnosis, because every tournament Sunday he wore red and dispatched his rivals with surgical coolness.
At the end of 2009, the carefully built image collapsed in a Florida gated community. A black SUV slammed into a fire hydrant at two in the morning, exposing a double life of serial affairs and out-of-control nights. The tabloid press tore apart the spotless hero that corporate ads had spent ten years selling to family audiences. That exodus of brands cost him twenty-three million dollars in lost sponsorships during the first fiscal year after the scandal.
But the real ordeal was not moral but purely physical. The explosive swing that had dazzled the circuit ended up wrecking his vertebrae and ligaments. He went under the knife four times between 2014 and 2017 to ease lower back pain that no conventional treatment could relieve. And in May 2017, Florida police arrested him asleep at the wheel under the effects of a massive cocktail of opioids.
The police mugshot of his swollen face made the rounds in newsrooms like the death certificate of a star.
Not even the most saccharine screenwriter in Hollywood would have dared to script the ending at Augusta in 2019. With his lower back held together by screws and his knees creaking with every step, Woods claimed his fifth Masters after eleven years without a major. The documentary Tiger, aired by HBO in 2021, dissected with brutal honesty that self-destructive spiral and the unexpected resurrection that fascinated millions. So the business around his name regained its commercial value within weeks.
The respite didn't last long. In February 2021, a high-speed car crash near Los Angeles nearly cost him his right leg and forced surgeons to stabilize his tibia with metal rods. Woods reduced his appearances on the course to a handful of events and commercial projects. In 2024, he launched his own clothing line with TaylorMade to secure the profitability of his image without depending on the pro schedule.
His sports record stands at fifteen Grand Slam titles and 82 PGA Tour wins, against seven back surgeries and three missed cuts at the majors he played in 2024.

Things you probably didn't know about Tiger Woods
I love to compete. That's the essence of who I am.
Tiger Woods was raised from infancy to be a great golfer and is not just intact but graceful and charming. The ranks of great golfers, swimmers and Dominican shortstops are not more noticeably skewed to the deranged than the general population.
I don't see myself as the Great Black Hope. I'm just a golfer who happens to be black and Asian. It doesn't matter whether they're white, black, brown or green.
If you're paying any attention at all, you'll see that the first person who ever publicly got away with being mixed was Barack Obama. Tiger Woods came close, but he never got away with it. Both blacks and whites questioned Woods.
My goal is to remain healthy my entire career, and a healthy diet seems like a good start.
He didn't seem concerned about his injuries at the time, which is not uncommon in traffic collisions. Many times people tend to be in shock. It's a traumatic experience. It's not uncommon for people to be focused on unimportant things or even if they are in pain, they may not feel it until much later
