Travis Kelce stands nearly six feet six inches tall, weighs about 250 pounds and earns a fortune crashing into things in the NFL. In March 2023, he hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live from Studio 8H in New York, and executives at the major Los Angeles studios took notice. That night he not only impersonated his brother on air, but also kept up with the comedy live without flinching in front of the cameras.

So the leap was no accident. The entertainment industry had spent decades searching for successors to the action stars who dominated the box office in the nineties, and the Ohio player had the exact mix of screen presence and street-smart charisma to fill that void.

The reality TV misstep and clinical horror

In 2016, he agreed to star in Catching Kelce, an E! network production in which fifty women competed for his romantic attention. That experiment drew scathing reviews and threatened to derail his screen ambitions before they could take off.

Nobody took him seriously.

But that stumble taught him to be selective about his appearances. Instead of wasting his credibility on crude formats, he waited eight years until Ryan Murphy offered him a role with real dramatic weight.

In 2024, he made his scripted acting debut in the FX series Grotesquerie, playing Ed Laclan, a morally complex nurse who shared scenes with Niecy Nash. Murphy didn't require him to audition on camera because he saw in his physical presence the ideal counterpoint to a sinister crime story.

Kelce memorized his lines between early-morning football training sessions and late-night filming days in California. The result surprised the skeptics, and specialized critics praised his restrained performance against those who predicted a mere tabloid publicity stunt.

Green Screens for Guerrilla Filmmaking

The offers poured in almost immediately.

In 2024, he produced the feature film My Dead Friend Zoe, a war veterans' story directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes that premiered at the South by Southwest festival in Austin.

The financial deal broke the mold in independent film. Kelce financed the movie using the clean energy tax credits of the Inflation Reduction Act, an accounting maneuver never before seen in Hollywood production that made it possible to shoot on a locked-in budget.

Soon after came the turn to raunchy comedy. Adam Sandler recruited him for a cameo in Happy Gilmore 2, released on Netflix in 2025. In the sequel, he played the short-tempered manager of a restaurant who harassed the character played by Bad Bunny, in a wild scene where he appeared tied up and covered in honey.

Filming was completed in three afternoons.

The Replacement for Analog Heroes

In 2024, he signed with Amazon to host the game show Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, a bet that opened the doors of American homes during prime family viewing hours.

And the big screen was quick to call him back. The production company Lionsgate acquired the rights to the action comedy Loose Cannons, championed by Chad Stahelski, with a commitment to give him the lead role outright. Stahelski built the story around the tough-guy buddy cop comedies of Walter Hill, looking for a lead who could carry the stunt sequences without body doubles.

Because the athlete never intended to limit himself to commercials during game breaks. His representation team in Beverly Hills mapped out an aggressive plan to turn every minute of media attention into production deals with control over the final cut.

In August 2024, his podcast New Heights signed a distribution deal with Wondery worth more than $100 million that locked in his audio and video rights for three full seasons.
