Victoria Tennant never needed to learn how to be a star, because she grew up surrounded by them. Her father was agent Cecil Tennant and her mother was the legendary ballerina Irina Baronova. That mix of business and pure art in the living room of their London home prepared her for an industry that often devours newcomers.
She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she refined the flawless diction that would later become her greatest asset in California studios.
And the effort paid off.
In 1983, the premiere of The Winds of War put her on the global map for good. Playing Pamela Tudsbury opposite Robert Mitchum required a restraint that Tennant handled with ease. The miniseries drew huge audiences, and she became the face of European elegance on American television in the 1980s.
But her career changed pace when she agreed to shoot Twice Upon a Time in 1984. On that set she met Steve Martin, and the chemistry went beyond the script. They married in 1986, and for nearly a decade they were one of the most talked-about couples in the entertainment press.
In 1991, they filmed Three Women for a Rascal together. It is a satire of life in Los Angeles in which she played a British journalist who brings order to the protagonist's chaotic life. The film grossed 40 million dollars in the U.S. domestic market alone.
Acting was not her only passion.
Starting in the nineties, she chose her roles with almost surgical precision. She appeared in episodes of The Mentalist and in the series Masters of Sex in 2014. She never sought to reclaim the lead roles of her early career, preferring to spend her time researching her own family's history.
In 2014, she published a biographical book about her mother. It was a project of eight years of research that brought the legacy of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo back from obscurity. Today, the hardcover volume is sold as a reference piece for historians of classical dance.
Tennant has always viewed film as a craft, not a religion.
In 2020, she took part in the film The Duchess, playing the protagonist's mother. Two years later, in 2022, she joined the cast of The Legend of La Llorona. She shot her scenes for this production on location in Mexico under the Saban Films banner.
