A man, Alexei, talks with his wife about their current situation and the reasons they drifted apart. The film is a continuous evocation of memories and feelings that move across different times without apparent order: his relationship with his mother, his childhood, … mixed with newsreel footage of the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the clash between the USSR and China over Damansky Island. Poems written and recited by Arseni Tarkovsky, the director's father, can be heard throughout the film. It portrays a past that is his own, but also that of a country and of world events.
