Stalingrad

Italian Riviera, late 1942. A group of German soldiers enjoys a few days of rest before heading to the Russian front to fight in Stalingrad. The conflict will be so bloody that it wears down their strength and morale. One of the most expensive productions in German cinema in recent years, made to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous battle. Its director, Joseph Vilsmaier (“Autumn Milk”), offers a psychological study of the four lead soldiers. Everything serves Vilsmaier to denounce the cruelty of war. Also noteworthy are the battle scenes, undoubtedly the most brutal in the history of the genre until “Saving Private Ryan” came along.
