In the year 1123, King Louis VI of France, known as "the Fat," enjoys a romantic getaway with the niece of the King of England. His vassal Godfrey, Count of Miramont, nicknamed "the Bold," is in charge of keeping watch over the meeting place. When enemy troops arrive, the monarch must flee in a hurry and runs into an English soldier who intends to capture him. Godfrey comes to his aid and saves the king's life. As a token of gratitude, the count receives a proposal that changes his situation: the monarch promises him in marriage to Frenebunda of Pouille, daughter of Duke Fulbert. Thus, the man tasked with protecting a royal secret suddenly finds himself engaged to a noblewoman he barely knows.
