Before heading into Abbey Road to write Skyfall, Adele hesitated for weeks. Producer Barbara Broccoli had handed her the confidential script for the Sam Mendes film, and the singer feared she wouldn't fit into the James Bond mythology. In the end she sat down at the piano with producer Paul Epworth with one fixed idea in mind.
She accepted the commission on one simple condition.
She wanted a funeral ballad inspired by Shirley Bassey's compositions but adapted to her broken contralto range. They recorded a first demo in just ten minutes. In 2013, that orchestrated piece with 77 musicians gave the British franchise its first Oscar for Best Original Song after five decades of drought in the Academy Awards category [cite: 1, 2].
Her relationship with image always worked through formal restraint. While American pop stars filled their productions with massive choreography and digital green screens, Adele preferred directing actors. In 2015, she contacted Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan to shoot the Hello music video on an abandoned farm in Quebec.
Dolan used 70-millimeter IMAX cameras for the first time in a music video, filming close-ups of her face under a sepia filter. The visual impact was electrifying. The video passed one billion views on YouTube in 87 days, thanks to a narrative edit that prioritized psychological close-ups over artifice.
Because Adele always conceived her albums as home soundtracks to heartbreak. On 21, released in 2011, the raw vocals of songs like Someone Like You rested solely on a grand piano and dim lighting designed to evoke European film noir.
The audience bought that sadness without a second thought.
In an industry obsessed with feeding daily screens, the London-born singer-songwriter built her star power on long absences. After selling more than 31 million copies of 21 and surpassing 22 million with 25, the Brit turned off the spotlights for six years. She returned in 2021 with the album 30 to dissect her divorce in twelve songs without a single concession to radio-friendly synth pop.
American television seized on that comeback to turn her music into a prime-time special recorded at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. The production Adele One Night Only drew ten million viewers on CBS. But the artist's focus was on live stages and meticulous control of the live sound.
In 2022, she launched the Weekends with Adele residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas after an initial postponement due to disagreements over the technical staging. She set up base there for two years. In August 2024, she took that same formula to Europe with a series of ten concerts in a temporary venue built specifically in Munich, featuring a continuous LED screen 220 meters long recorded by the Guinness World Records.
And the machine came to a halt once again.
In November 2024, she brought down the curtain on her Las Vegas residency after completing 100 exclusive shows and confirmed an indefinite retirement from the stage, closing a decade in which she sold more than 120 million physical albums worldwide.

"I love seeing Lady Gaga's boobs and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry's boobs and bum. Love it. But that's not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes, I make music for ears."
Should I give up,Or should I just keep chasing pavements?Even if it leads nowhere,Or would it be a waste?Even if I knew my place should I leave it there?Should I give up,Or should I just keep chasing pavements?Even if it leads nowhere.
There's a fire starting in my heartReaching a fever pitch,It’s bringing me out the darkFinally I can see you crystal clearGo head and sell me outAnd I'll lay your ship bare.See how I leave with every piece of youDon't underestimate the things that I will do.
Send my love to your new lover,Treat her better. We've gotta let go of all of our ghosts. We both know we ain't kids no more.
Oh, my God, I can't believe it.Out of all the people in the world,What is the likelihood of jumpingOut of my life and into your arms?Maybe, baby, I'm just losing my mind,'Cause this is trouble, but it feels right.Teetering on the edge of Heaven and HellIs a battle that I cannot fight.
"I don't really need to stand out, there's room for everyone. Although I haven't built a niche yet, I'm just writing love songs."
