Adrienne La Russa didn't need years of Broadway training to understand how the camera worked. In 1969, he worked under Lucio Fulci to shoot Beatrice Cenci, a historical drama with horror undertones that is now a study piece in Italian film schools. That leading role demanded a rawness that the New York actress delivered without reservation.
That shoot in Europe defined her character in the eyes of the industry.
Critics of the time praised her ability to hold tense close-ups. But European cinema was only a stepping stone. After returning to the United States, television became her natural habitat throughout the 1970s.
In 1975, she joined the cast of the daily drama Days of Our Lives to play Brooke Hamilton. This job gave her a stability that few actors of her generation managed to achieve in Los Angeles. Fifty episodes later, her face was already part of the collective imagination of American households.
The year 1976 was a professional turning point. Nicolas Roeg chose her for The Man Who Fell to Earth, a film that today remains a masterpiece of science fiction. La Russa played Helen and shared the set with David Bowie at the height of the British singer's mystical period.
And the gamble paid off.
Although her role was a supporting one, the film allowed her to move away from the melodramatic register of soap operas. Roeg's cinema demanded an almost documentary-like naturalness. The production was complicated, and the final cut was confusing for mainstream audiences, but the film earned seven million dollars during its initial release in the United States.
The actress's private life made headlines for reasons unrelated to her acting talent. In 1984, she married Steven Seagal, an actor who was not yet the action star we know today. That union had legal problems from day one.
Seagal had not finalized his previous divorce.
For this reason, the marriage was legally annulled in 1987. The legal process was quick but left La Russa in an awkward position with the entertainment press. After this episode, the actress became much more selective about her projects.
In 1993, she appeared in an episode of the series SeaQuest DSV under the direction of Bryan Spicer. It was one of her last appearances before she fully stepped away from Hollywood's front line.
She currently lives in Los Angeles, far from the promotional circuit. Her latest recorded professional activity is limited to managing her image rights and occasional contributions to film archives. In 1987, she signed the documents that closed the most high-profile chapter of her career, and since then she has not given in-depth interviews to the international press.
