Shadow Money

Akon spent three years behind bars before the world heard his voice. It's not the redemption story that major label marketing departments like to sell. Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam was born in Missouri, but Senegal set the rhythm in his hands from childhood.

In 2004, he released Trouble, and the single Locked Up brought R&B out of luxury clubs and into street reality. That album wasn't desperately chasing commercial radio. But radio stations couldn't ignore a sound that mixed African percussion with the drama of American asphalt.

No one expected a convict to dominate the sales charts.

Before signing his first major contract, he spent months perfecting a style in which Auto-Tune was not a patch for a lack of talent. He used it as one more instrument to give a metallic texture to his stories of crime and regret. Because Akon understood early on that in music, narrative matters as much as melody.

In 2006, the album Konvicted sold more than five million copies in the United States alone. That allowed him to stop being just an artist and become a brand with two record labels of his own. And his eye for business proved sharper than his ability to write catchy hooks.

The star-making machine and oblivion

In 2008, he founded KonLive Distribution and set his sights on a young New York artist no one wanted to sign. That woman was Lady Gaga. The singer's success multiplied Akon's fortune in a way his own records never could have. So he decided that being behind the mixing board was more profitable than being in front of the spotlight.

But the ego of the music industry often devours those who stay away from the microphone for too long. Despite collaborating with Michael Jackson on Hold My Hand for 2007, Akon's relevance on the charts began to fade. Public tastes shifted toward more synthetic pop, and he decided the American market was no longer his absolute priority.

The money changed hands, but not the ambition.

In 2014, he launched Akon Lighting Africa to bring solar electricity to millions of homes across the continent. It wasn't a PR move to clean up his image. The company managed to install 100,000 solar streetlights in 480 communities across 15 African countries in just a couple of years.

Building a private country

In 2018, he launched his own cryptocurrency under the name Akoin to create an independent financial system in areas with unstable local currencies. His critics called the idea delusions of grandeur. But he responded with architectural plans and government agreements signed on official letterhead.

In 2020, he announced the start of construction on Akon City in Senegal. It is a smart city with an aesthetic reminiscent of science fiction movies, operating exclusively on his digital currency. The project includes a concession of 2,000 acres of land granted by the Senegalese government near the international airport.

Many see this initiative as a dangerous utopia or a simple large-scale real estate move. Others believe it is the first step toward an artist taking full control over the development of a nation. Akon ignores the criticism while continuing to seek investors in the Gulf countries to fund the construction phases planned through 2029.

The initial investment for the first phase of Akon City was set at 6,000 million dollars.
