At twenty-three, Alejandro Amenábar was failing the Directing course at the Faculty of Information Sciences of Complutense University. His professor argued that he did not understand the grammar of cinematic framing. Shortly after, that same student wrote the screenplay for his first feature film after catching the attention of José Luis Cuerda with a couple of short films shot on home video.
In 1996, Tesis reached theaters. This thriller about the underground market for recordings of real torture cost just over 700,000 pesetas, funded by the crew itself and went on to gross hundreds of millions before winning seven Goya Awards.
No one in the industry saw the blow coming.
Audiences encountered a director trained in the conventions of American suspense who also composed his own melodies on an electronic keyboard set up beside his bed. The following year, he directed Open Your Eyes, blending psychological intrigue and science fiction while emptying Madrid's Gran Vía at dawn on a Sunday morning.
The impact of that film went beyond borders. Tom Cruise acquired the rights to produce and star in the remake titled Vanilla Sky, and also offered the Chilean-Spanish director a budget in the United States to shoot in English with complete creative freedom.
In 2001, The Others hit theaters. Shot in a palace in Cantabria with Nicole Kidman as the lone lead, the film avoided big digital effects, relying instead on creaking wood, constant fog and natural light filtering through the curtains. The production cost $20 million and earned more than $200 million at the global box office.
But his goal was not to move to California. Amenábar always preferred to keep control over the final cut rather than submit to the demands of major studio committees.
So he returned to Spain to focus on a real case he had been following in the press for years. In 2004, he released The Sea Inside, which centers on the legal and personal battle of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic man from Galicia. The film swept 14 Goya Awards and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the ceremony held in Los Angeles in 2005.
And the gamble paid off.
That recognition opened the doors to enormous budgets. In 2009, he built the sets of Agora in Malta, an ambitious project shot in English about Hypatia of Alexandria, with a cost that exceeded 50 million euros. Although Spanish theaters responded well, international distribution failed to recoup the initial investment.
Six years later, he returned to Canada to shoot Regression, a thriller about satanic cults with Ethan Hawke that stumbled at the box office and with specialized critics alike.
It was time to take in the sails.
In 2019, he released Mientras dure la guerra, which centers on the war of words between Miguel de Unamuno and the military hierarchy in Salamanca at the start of the 1936 conflict. Audiences responded immediately, and the film grossed more than 12 million euros in Spain despite the political tensions surrounding its screenings.
In 2021, he tried his hand at serialized fiction by directing all six episodes of La Fortuna for television platforms, adapting a graphic novel about the plundering of the national underwater heritage.
In 2025, El cautivo hit theaters, a reconstruction of Miguel de Cervantes's years of captivity in Algiers after he was captured by corsairs in the Mediterranean Sea.
To build the dungeons of the Ottoman prison at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, the production team constructed more than 1,200 square meters of continuous set made entirely of plaster, treated wood and fiberglass.
