Alvin Sargent didn't write for the eyes but for the gut. In the late sixties he began shaping stories where silence weighed more than the scream. Before winning statuettes, he worked on television series such as Route 66, searching for a voice of his own that took time to arrive.
And he found it in human fragility.
In 1973 he adapted Joe David Brown's novel into Paper Moon. The relationship between a con man and an orphaned girl during the Depression earned him his first Oscar nomination. But full recognition came with Julia in 1977. That script about anti-fascist resistance won him his first golden statuette.
Three years later, he repeated the feat with Gente corriente in 1980. Robert Redford made her directing debut, and Sargent wrote a dry family drama that emotionally devastated American audiences. He turned emotional distance into an unstoppable narrative engine.
Many people thought his time had passed when the new millennium arrived. But in 2002, he was tasked with polishing the screenplay for Spider-Man. His wife, producer Laura Ziskin, knew the film needed heart and not just digital effects. Sargent provided the humanity needed to make Peter Parker feel like a real person.
He wrote the sequels to 2004 and 2007 for Sam Raimi, because he understood that a superhero is only interesting if we care about his everyday problems. In 2012 he returned to the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man when he was already over eighty years old.
His pen was the most seasoned in the industry at the time.
Not everything was hits and red carpets. During the nineties, his pace of production slowed considerably, and many of his drafts ended up in studio executives' drawers. But Sargent never stopped working as a script consultant for fellow writers.
He took uncredited assignments to fix dialogue that wasn't working. So his real influence on late-century cinema is far greater than the official credits suggest. He preferred the shadows and technical work to the noise of interviews.
Sargent died at his home in Seattle in May 2019 of natural causes. He was 92 years old. His last documented professional work was a dialogue revision for an independent drama in 2014.
