In February 2008, the U.S. embassy denied her a visa due to legal troubles, and Amy Winehouse had to pick up five Grammy Awards from a studio in West London. She was twenty-four, with her hair in a bun that defied every aesthetic norm. She looked at the screen with an expression of total disbelief, almost annoyance.

Music was always her only real refuge.

She grew up in the Southgate suburb listening to Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington on her grandmother Cynthia's record player. At fourteen, she bought her first acoustic guitar because she wanted to accompany herself while writing bitter lyrics about teenage breakups. She had no interest in music theory or the theatrical method of the Sylvia Young Theatre School, which she ended up leaving early due to misconduct.

The Analog Sound of Brooklyn

In 2003, she released Frank, produced by Salaam Remi. It was a direct mix of classic jazz and hip hop rhythm tracks that caught the attention of the London press. But she was not satisfied with the final cut, because label executives imposed commercial arrangements without consulting her creative judgment in the studio.

So in 2006 she crossed the Atlantic to New York to lock herself away with Mark Ronson. Ronson brought her into the Daptone Records studios with the Dap-Kings, a band that played live without digital clicks. That blend of 1960s soul and confessional lyrics gave birth to the album Back to Black.

The album sold more than sixteen million copies worldwide and topped the charts across the English-speaking world.

And it worked on the first take.

The Camden Siege

Photographers set up a permanent watch outside her home on Camden Square starting in 2007. Every nighttime exit, every stumble out of a pub, and every visit to the emergency room was paid for handsomely by the British tabloid newsrooms. The gossip industry turned her physical decline into a daily business.

Because no one around her could stop a machine of scheduled concerts that had become unsustainable. In June 2011, she took the stage in Belgrade drunk for a barely forty-minute show, where the audience ended up booing her inability to sing. That night, she abruptly canceled the European tour.

On July 23, 2011, her bodyguard found her unresponsive in bed, surrounded by empty bottles. The autopsy report determined that her blood contained 4.16 grams of alcohol per liter, a lethal level caused by a sudden relapse after weeks of forced abstinence.

The Cinematic Autopsy

In 2015, filmmaker Asif Kapadia released the documentary Amy. The film dispensed with conventional talking heads and built a devastating story from personal voice messages, home videos and archival footage. The work won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, showing the public decline of an ordinary girl with no family protection.

In 2024, director Sam Taylor-Johnson brought the biographical drama Back to Black to theaters, starring Marisa Abela in the lead role [1]. The production meticulously recreated the bars of Camden and the recording sessions in London, but specialized critics condemned the whitewashing of her father and the absence of his darkest sides [2, 3]. The film wrapped its international theatrical run with box office earnings of fifty million dollars [4].

Winehouse's official discography was forever limited to two studio albums and twenty-three tracks she personally approved before her death.

Trivia about Amy Winehouse

Things you probably didn't know about Amy Winehouse

At age ten, she formed a rap duo called Sweet ‘n’ Sour with her friend Juliette Ashby, inspired by Salt-N-Pepa.
A classmate shared one of her demos with a band manager, which helped her enter the music industry at just 16 years old.
Her father, Mitch, was a taxi driver and semi-professional singer; as a girl, Amy listened to his jazz records, though she was also a fan of rap and the girl groups of the 1960s.
Her debut album, "Frank," included songs she co-wrote, but none of its four singles reached the top 50 of the UK Singles Chart.
"Back to Black" was conceived with Mark Ronson, Salaam Remi and the Dap-Kings, the group that regularly backed New York singer Sharon Jones.
She was the first British singer to win five Grammy Awards, including three of the four major categories: best new artist, record of the year and song of the year.
Her collaboration with Tony Bennett, "Body and Soul," was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 2011 and posthumously won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Amy Winehouse once performed on stage with Prince, who accompanied her on guitar.
Her last released track was "Body and Soul," a collaboration with Tony Bennett included on the album "Duets II: The Great Performances."

Quotes by Amy Winehouse

  • I'm a songwriter but she [Katie Melua] has her songs written for her... She must think it's her fucking lucky day... It's not like she's singing old songs like Jamie [Cullum], she's singing shit new songs that her manager writes for her.
  • You should be stronger than me,But instead you're longer than frozen turkey,Why'd you always put me in control? All I need is for my man to live up to his role,Always wanna talk it through- I'm ok,Always have to comfort you every day,But that's what I need you to do - are you gay?
  • Though I battle blind,Love is a fate resignedMemories mar my mind,Love is a fate resignedOver futile odds,And laughed at by the godsAnd now the final frame,Love is a losing game.
  • It's not important to me to make other people at ease. I am difficult, but that's 'cause I don’t really give a fuck.
  • You can't sit down right,Cause your jeans are too tight,And you're lucky it's ladies night. With your big empty purse,Every week it gets worse,At least your breasts cost more than hers.
  • I'd rather be at home with Ray,I ain't got seventy daysCause there's nothing,There's nothing you can teach meThat I can't learn from Mr Hathaway.I didn't get a lot in classBut I know it don't come in a shot glass.
