Angela Lansbury arrived in New York in 1940, fleeing the Nazi bombings with a suitcase and little else. Her mother was an actress, and she knew no other trade than pretending in front of a camera. She was barely seventeen when George Cukor tested her for Gaslight in 1944. That round-faced teenager played a cheeky maid who stood up to none other than Ingrid Bergman.
She earned her first Oscar nomination for that early work. But Hollywood decided her look fit worldly, wise characters better than roles as a young lover. In 1945, she was again nominated for an Oscar for The Picture of Dorian Gray, and MGM immediately typecast her as a mature woman. She was only twenty, but on screen she already looked forty.
And the industry showed her youth no mercy.
In 1962, she played the scheming mother of Laurence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate. Interestingly, the actor was only three years younger than she was. Lansbury took on the challenge without complaint, understanding that steady work was worth more than the vanity of top billing. That performance earned her a third Oscar nomination and the lasting respect of casting directors of the era.
Tired of playing gray supporting roles in movies, she decided to try her luck on Broadway. In 1966, she opened in the musical Mame, and the success was so huge that the show ran for years. She won her first Tony Award and discovered that the stage let her sing and dance with an energy the movies denied her. It was on stage that she truly took control of her career and stopped being the eternal sidekick.
But the general public still associated her with supporting roles in mystery movies. In 1978, she appeared in Death on the Nile, playing an eccentric, alcoholic novelist. That shoot in Egypt alongside Peter Ustinov was the dress rehearsal for what came next. Lansbury handled suspense with a naturalness that felt almost familiar to the average moviegoer.
She felt at home amid fictional crimes.
She turned down several television offers until, in 1984, she read the script for a series about a Maine writer who solved murders. CBS executives had little faith in a sixty-year-old leading lady, but Lansbury set her own terms. She wanted Jessica Fletcher to be a smart, active woman who didn't need a male partner to carry the plot.
The series Murder, She Wrote ran for twelve consecutive seasons. Lansbury didn't just act; she eventually took on executive producing to keep watch over every detail of the scripts. By 1991, the show was one of the most profitable properties on American television, and she became one of the wealthiest women in the industry. She turned a clean mystery series into a global phenomenon without resorting to explicit violence.
In 1991, she lent her voice to the teapot in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. She recorded the film's title song in a single take accompanied by a live orchestra. Sound engineers couldn't believe an actress her age kept that vocal control after decades of cigarettes and stage work. That melody kept her relevant with new generations who didn't even know who Cukor was.
And she never stopped working.
In 2013, she received an Honorary Academy Award for her lifetime achievement after losing in three previous nominations. Her final film appearance was a brief cameo in Glass Onion, filmed in 2022 shortly before her death. In the scene, she plays Among Us over a video call with other famous names from pop culture.
Angela Lansbury died in her Los Angeles home on October 11, 2022, in her sleep. She was ninety-six years old and just five days away from her next birthday.
