Anne Lockhart was born in 1953 surrounded by scripts and filming lights. Her grandfather Gene was Oscar-nominated, and her mother June starred in Lassie. It's a family of actors who weren't after fame but pure craft. By age four she was already working in short films and commercials. She learned early that in this business punctuality matters more than boundless talent.
The chance of a lifetime slipped away because of a scheduling conflict.
In 1976, George Lucas had her as first choice to play Princess Leia in Star Wars. But the actress's prior commitments prevented the contract from being signed. So the role went to Carrie Fisher, and Lockhart continued on her path in television. She never showed bitterness over that lost opportunity. In the Los Angeles industry, twists of fate are part of everyday life.
Her face finally became known worldwide in 1978. She played Lieutenant Sheba in the original series Battlestar Galactica. She was not a passive female character. She piloted combat ships and made tactical decisions in a science fiction setting that was still mostly male territory. That role earned her a fan base that still follows her decades later at conventions around the world.
From the eighties on, her career took a less flashy but much more steady path. She appeared in series such as Magnum, P.I. and Knight Rider. But her real livelihood came through her voice. Lockhart specialized in ADR, the post-production process of re-recording dialogue and ambient sounds.
Not everyone can handle the anonymity of voice-over work.
She is one of the most respected professionals in looping for major productions. Her ability to recreate background voices and technical dialogue is legendary in sound studios. In 2012 she began an extensive collaboration with the Chicago Fire franchise, where she plays the emergency dispatch operator. She is a voice audiences hear constantly, yet almost no one connects her with the spaceship pilot of the 1970s.
Off set, her life has been tied to the rodeo world. She is an experienced rider who has competed in charity championships for years. That physical toughness carries over into her work. She doesn't complain about ten-hour days locked in a dark recording booth. For her, acting is a technical service, not an exercise in ego.
In 2021 she appeared in the short film The Method. She still takes small roles in independent films when the script interests her. But her main schedule is set by voice-dubbing sessions in Los Angeles. She has worked on more than 300 projects, counting her on-screen appearances and her audio work. The official record of her activity with the actors' union shows a continuity that very few names from her generation have managed to maintain. The contract for her most recent recording session in 2024 sets a standard union hourly rate.
