Anthony Walters didn't break into film through the front door of the major studios. His training came from short films (that territory where budgets are scarce and ingenuity rules). In 2014, he presented The Last Tree, and British critics detected a voice that steered clear of the usual artifice.
And the gamble paid off.
His style is based on direct observation. Walters prefers to let the camera breathe with the actors rather than impose impossible shots. But this simplicity is deceptive, because behind it lies meticulous planning of space and sound.
Before moving on to feature films, he worked in technical departments, where he learned that a film's rhythm is decided in the editing room and not just in the script. That quiet period of learning gave him an understanding of how the industry works from the ground up.
In 2017, he shot Screwed, and the project confirmed his narrative obsessions. The film delves into toxic masculinity and the consequences of violence in urban settings. He had no interest in pleasing audiences with happy endings or easy answers.
Walters writes his stories with his ear pressed to the street. The dialogue in his works avoids excessive exposition, focusing instead on what the characters leave unsaid. As a result, his films demand constant attention from the audience.
Nobody expected that success.
Shooting Screwed was a logistical challenge that tested his ability to manage crews under pressure. Walters decided to shoot on real locations to preserve the authenticity of the story. He managed to finish production in just 18 days with a crew kept to a bare minimum.
But recognition didn't distract him from his main goal. Walters has turned down offers from major franchises because he prefers to keep creative control over his scripts. In 2020, he focused on writing new projects that explore identity on the outskirts of big cities.
In 2022, he produced several independent projects that aimed to give a voice to first-time filmmakers. His role as a mentor has been essential to understanding the new British cinema. Walters believes that technique should always serve emotion, and not the other way around.
Then came the change of scale.
By 2024, the director had turned his attention to stories with a more pronounced psychological component. His evolution from social realism toward a cinema of atmosphere shows a growing maturity in his use of light and silence. Walters no longer needs direct visual impact to create tension.
His casting process is famous for its rigor. Walters spends months searching for faces untainted by commercial television. He looks for truth in the smallest gesture. For this director, an actor's face is the most complex landscape there is.
The budget for his latest international production in 2025 was set at 4.2 million euros. The entire film was shot with 35mm lenses to preserve an organic texture in the image.
