Antonio Orozco was hauling bags of cement on construction sites on the outskirts of Barcelona when record labels were still slamming the door in his face. The son of a working-class family from Osuna who had settled in Hospitalet de Llobregat, he taught himself to play guitar by ear after a teenage trip to Seville. That blend of Andalusian roots and urban concrete shaped a very physical approach to music, far removed from any conservatory sophistication.
In 2000, he funded his debut album Un reloj y una vela however he could. He sold more than one hundred thousand copies through thousands of miles in a van and gigs in tiny venues where the sound system failed half the nights.
And the gamble paid off.
In the early stages of his career, the industry tried to pigeonhole him with the easy label of pop with a flamenco touch. But Orozco always pursued harder arrangements, with dry electric guitars and a highly theatrical dramatic tension. His father's accidental death on a construction site when he was young forced him to support his household, a pressure that suddenly carried over into his songwriting.
With Semilla del silencio in 2001, he surpassed three hundred thousand copies sold. That record paved the way for big-budget productions in Madrid and Miami without diluting his working-class neighborhood identity.
He sold over one and a half million records in a market that was beginning to collapse under digital piracy. While other artists relied on commercial radio airplay, Orozco filled venues with three-hour concerts that often left him hoarse.
Orozco's first formal foray into film came in 2005. Directors José Corbacho and Juan Cruz were looking for a melody that captured the pulse of the street for Tapas, and they found the perfect closing track in his repertoire for a feature film shot in his own neighborhood.
Years later, in 2018, he co-wrote the track Igual que tú with Pablo López for the Spanish-language adaptation of the animated film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The assignment demanded precise meter adapted to digital animation and confirmed his craftsmanship in writing under someone else's direction.
But his biggest leap onto the big screen came in 2021 with El Cover. The debut feature by Secun de la Rosa required a central piece capable of explaining the fear of failure and the cracks in the anonymous singers who get by in Benidorm's venues.
Before sitting down at the piano, Orozco asked for the full script so he could work through the dialogue with the director. Together with arranger Jordi Colell, he composed the ballad Que me busquen por dentro, whose final arrangement was recorded with the Bratislava Philharmonic Orchestra to achieve a dense acoustic texture.
That effort culminated in the nomination for the Goya Award for Best Original Song in 2022.
He didn't take home the big prize.
The award for the thirty-sixth edition went to María José Llergo's score for Mediterráneo. So Orozco returned from Valencia without a trophy, but with the explicit respect of music supervisors in the audiovisual industry.
Television absorbed much of his schedule starting in 2013 through his role as a coach on La Voz. The small-screen showcase multiplied his reach among viewers who never set foot at a festival, though it also strained his pace in the studio.
That overexposure took its toll on his personal life. In 2017, the loss of his son Jan's mother and the accumulated exhaustion led him to take a complete break from his public activity to restore his emotional balance.
Nobody gives anything away at that table.
He went back to the studio in 2020 to finish Aviónica, a project that took five years to wrap up and went on to sell two platinum records. In 2023 he released the collaborative project La canción que nunca viste, reorganizing his catalog with international musicians and setting up the technical machinery for his 2025 live tour, built on large-scale budgets.
