Carmen Machi

At thirty-five, Carmen Machi had no television at home, because independent theater barely paid enough to cover the rent on her Madrid apartment. She got by taking small roles in productions at La Abadía under José Luis Gómez. She knew the texts of Valle-Inclán by heart, but beyond the walls of the theater circuit, nobody recognized her face.

Casting director Luis San Narciso discovered her on stage and offered her a recurring guest role in the sitcom 7 vidas. Her character, Aída García, was a cynical cleaning woman, battered by life and addicted to orujo, who on paper was only meant to appear in a couple of comedic scenes.

And fiction blew up.

That one-off job turned into a fixed contract that lasted five seasons. In 2005, Telecinco gave the green light to the first fiction spin-off on national television and put her name in the title card: Aída.

The premiere drew more than six million viewers in front of their televisions. The character grew until it consumed the actress's private life, with fans chasing her daily and calling her by her alter ego's name at the supermarket. So after ninety episodes, she decided to shake things up and leave the series at the peak of its ratings.

The toll of the living room

Leaving a millionaire salary in mainstream television seemed like a technical gamble. Her agents tried to convince her to stay a few more months, but Machi preferred to lock herself in a small theater to stage hour-and-a-half dramatic monologues.

In the stage production Juicio a una zorra, directed by Miguel del Arco, she took on the role of Helen of Troy alone on stage. Those performances sold out for months and shattered the cliché that she could only deliver comedic one-liners.

In 2009, the filmmaker from La Mancha wrote La concejala antropófaga especially for her, a satirical piece shot in a single continuous eight-minute take in which the actress delivered biting dialogue without blinking at the camera. Almodóvar later said he had never seen an actress hit technical marks with such cool precision.

The script was locked in on the first take.

Fifty-six million euros

El cine comercial a gran escala la reclamó con fuerza en 2014 a través de Spanish Affair, dirigida por Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. El largometraje recaudó 56 millones de euros en taquilla y sentó a casi diez millones de personas en las salas de cine.

For playing the fake mother who pretended to be a Basque separatist to cover up a sentimental sham, the Academy awarded her the Goya for Best Supporting Actress. She won the award at fifty-one, with thirty years of acting experience behind her.

But Machi never settled for profitable vaudeville.

In 2022, she accepted the motherly role in Piggy, the rural horror film directed by Carlota Pereda. She traded her smiles for a bloodstained smock and a hunting shotgun, on shooting days at forty degrees in Extremadura.

Before filming, she always reads the full script in one go to memorize it with technical precision. She doesn't improvise lines or argue with the cinematographers about where the light goes.

In 2023, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo put her at the center of La Mesías. Her portrayal of Montserrat Baró, an enlightened matriarch who traps her children in mystical delusions, brought a flood of favorable reviews and the Feroz Award.

In 2024, Diego San José wrote the series Celeste with her in mind. To play Tax Inspector Sara Santano, the actress spent several weeks reviewing real tax files with ministry experts.

That same year she shot the feature film Tratamos demasiado bien a las mujeres under Clara Bilbao's direction in the forests of Galicia. The production wrapped its schedule after six weeks of shooting in the rain, on a tight budget of four million euros.
