Amaia is a young Basque woman who has just called off her engagement and travels to Seville with her two best friends to try to forget her ex-boyfriend. She feels out of place in a sevillana dress at a flamenco tablao. On stage, a comedian mocks the Basque people with jokes based on stereotypes, and Amaia, fed up, gets up from her chair and confronts him. That comedian is Rafa, a Sevillian who has never left Andalusia and is obsessed with the only things that matter to him: fino sherry, hair gel, and women. The film is directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro and stars Clara Lago and Dani Rovira. The first few minutes show the immediate clash between the two, a confrontation that sets the whole story in motion.

Trivia about Spanish Affair

The Sevillian bar Los Muelles, which appears in the film, isn't in Seville at all but in Mondragón, in the province of Gipuzkoa.

The town in the story, Argoitia, is fictional and was created by combining several towns in the Basque Country and Navarre. The protagonist's house is actually in Leiza, in Navarre.

The original working title of the script was Marcianos en la Tierra, a provisional name used to keep the project secret during development.

The main theme, No te marches jamás, is performed by Leire Martínez, lead singer of La Oreja de Van Gogh, and Andalusian singer-songwriter David DeMaría, each in their own language.

By mid-April 2014, it had surpassed 6.5 million viewers and became the most-watched Spanish film in Spain's history.

Its TV premiere on November 11, 2015, on Telecinco and Cuatro drew 8 270 000 viewers and a 47.5% audience share.

Dani Rovira spent a week and a half working on the Basque accent with an actor from the region before filming their scenes.

The film won three Goya Awards: Best Supporting Actor for Karra Elejalde, Best Supporting Actress for Carmen Machi, and Best New Actor for Dani Rovira.
